The Petzl Dart Crampons' fixed mono point gives it the low-profile design and low weight to excel on burly ice and mixed routes. Petzl's Sidelock system provides a level of security unmatched by traditional bindings at a fraction of the weight. The Dart crampon comes with a Flicklock system for climbers who like more traditional crampons. These technical crampons feel incredibly light on your boots and allow precise footwork on technical terrain. A steeply angled front point on the Dart Crampons provides secure edging, while the aggressive secondary points increase security on pure ice.
Mono-point design ideal for steep ice and mixed climbing
Minimalist design for seriously low weight
Step-in attachment for quick and solid use with ice-specific boots
Bottom Line: Move with confidence on the steepest winter routes.
If you haven't already found the answer, Yes, they do fit the Nepals... they have fit issues with Koflachs and other plastic boots - or so I'm told. These fit my Nepal size 48 well with the longer bar. Hope this helps.
These crampons are light and climb steep ice and mixed terrain great! I use them in the mountains too. Just used them for a recent (September 2008) ascent of the Black Ice Couloir in Grand Teton National Park. The closure system takes a little getting used to. I recommend pushing in, towards the boot on the side lock (small metal triangle) when closing the boot. This will limit the torque on that triangle, which I have bent in years past, when I didn't do the suggestion above. If you are not heelhooking and don't mind a little more weight, I recommend the leverwire closure (more traditional). If you want to save weight every time you take a step or kick your crampons in ice, go with the leverlock, as I do. I like the Darts (mono) for mixed climbing and the Dartwins (called Darts and shown above, that have the "twin" front points) for straight ice, or mostly ice. If you are going to get a pair of poons that excel on steep ice and you can take up mountaineering routs, the Darts/Dartwins are a great choice.
I'm climbing to base camp and then up through Khumba Icefall to Camp 2. Are these the crampons to go with or another type from Petzl, such as Dartwin, M10, Sarken, or Vasak. I have the Scarpa Phantom 6000 boots. Thanks.
These aren't mountaineering crampons. You could use them, but these are designed specfically for steep, technical ice climbing. Definitely don't get a monopoint crampon like this one. Also, horizontal front points (as opposed to the vertically oriented front point of this design) are much better for mountaineering use as they have more surface area and work better in snow. Another note: walkability. The angle, design and number of points on a crampon affect walkability. Something like Black Diamond Sabretooth will walk a whole lot easier (even when using full-shank boots) because of the design. These are a few things to think about.

The Petzl Dart crampon performs very well on waterfall ice and mixed terrain. They pack a lot of punch for being such a light crampon. They are also very agile on mixed terrain. The Sidelock offers an uber-secure, and solid, boot-to-crampon connection allowing you to kick, twist and torque to your heart's content without worry of losing a crampon.
Any ideas if I could mix and match Grivel and Petzl - I have Grivel Airtechs for alpine, and would be interested in gettting the Dart front parts for ice and mixed, while utilising the linking bar and the back end of the Grivels - I guess the big question is, will Grivel linking bar fit through the Dart fronts?
These are great all around crampons. I've climbed ice and mixed routes with them and have been very happy. The enclosure is not very traditional and takes a little getting used to but works very well and feel very secure.
For that large a boot, you will probably need a longer linking bar, an accessory bough separate. I know both petzl and grivel make them for their crampons, but I am pretty sure they all do! check out manufacturers sites; These will not fit a 15 with the bar provided. You can get them from Petzl. Just googled it and found them at ems for $17. They are called PETZL Long-Link Bar Crampon Extensions.
The current photo above is of the Dart. The Dartwin has two front points, vs. one on the Dart. The sidelock works very well. It is really nice to not have a bulky piece of plastic digging into your heel, especially through leather boots. it is important to always have the strap go over the lever to "lock" it in place. This crampon fits my Garmont Radium's and a couple pairs of older Dynafit boots. It is also possible to purchase wider bails from Petzl (sold as Telemark Toe Bails).
