Your dog is stoked on day hikes, and even more stoked if she feels like she has a job to do. Throw some treats and a leash in the Ruffwear Approach Pack and let your pup carry her own pack. This Ruffwear pack also comes in handy when you and your dog are training for longer backpacking trips. The Approach's harness provides superior fitting, load-carrying stability, and improved support without excessive straps that might catch on twigs and bushes. Tough nylon fabric provides durability for years of use. Low-profile, streamlined saddlebags keep loads comfortably balanced so your pup can bound around without toppling over. This Ruffwear dog pack comes in three different sizes, so it'll fit securely on pint-sized pups or burly beasts.
Bottom Line: Let your pup feel like he or she is part of the pack.
Piper is a pit-bull hybrid (a nice way of saying hes a mixed up Pit with taller legs than his true Pit cousins!) with a girth measurement of 29 inches and a neck to tail base length of about 21 inches. The medium Approach is a good fit for him and allows him to carry all the food he needs for a 7 night outing. This pack sits stable on him and doesn't slide no matter what Piper puts it through. I would buy this pack again.
My dog is between sizes, so I thought I would run this by you. His girth is 31 inches and the length is 22.... so a large medium or a small large. Since I cannot find the pact locally to try it on, I will have to order it on line, and want to get it right the first time.
i have a 60# black lab mix, realy he is a heinz 57(alittle bit of everything). he uses the med. size pack and it works great. enough room to pack a weeks worth of food easy. seems to be comfy for the dog and you can adjust as you need to with the chest and belly straps. would buy it again if ever needed.
I have an adventurous Lab who has some knee issues, including lots of arthritis. She's sound to run and climb, and more than game, but she wears out faster than she used to. Is this pack something we can use to give her a boost when needed and help her up the stairs, like the web harness is supposed to be?
In that case this should be fine, the harness on the pack is exactly like the web harness. btw, I was in no way questioning your intentions, just throwing the thought out there in case it hadn't crossed your mind.
I want a harness to help move her. Her knees are arthritic, not weak. She is cleared for all activities by two veterinary surgeons. This pack would be purchased on their recommendations, as they suggested a sound body harness for assists, rather than the standard hospital practise of looping a leash under the dog's tummy. She's only ever carried her empty plastic poop bags and occasionally a water bowl. The stores near me only have this pack in her size, not the web harness. It was merely an inquiry as to the quality of support provided, and certainly no indication that I would intentionally hurt my dog or ask her to carry any undue burden for goodness sake!
It will provide some support for lifting her over small obstacles. Don't know if I would use it to lift her entirely off the ground though. But why would you want to put a pack on her that would only add more weight and stress to her already weak joints?
This one is of the approach pack 2, there are two other views of this pack below some where. In the medium size. We use it on walks and trails filled with my boys water, collapsable bowl and treats and stuff. It's nice cause it helps him burn off more of his energy. Some dogs just like feeling like they need to work!
Okay really I got the Approach 2 pack, and it's not on here anymore, but it's still a good pack. Easy to keep clean, easy to adjust, looks good! I have a belgian malinois ( google it if you don't know what it is, and NO it's not a german shepherd.) and if I had gone by the sizing I would have gotton a Large, but my dog is a medium. But returning something through these guys is easy, so if you need to adjust it's cool. I was a bit of a turd and went to a local store that sold the same item I bought to make sure I was getting the right size, and ordered it from these guys! It was the first thing I had got from here, and it won't be the last. Ruffwear makes good durable stuff anyway, my dog doen't mind wearing it. Keep in mind that you should only put 1/3 of your dogs weight into the saddle bags no mater how much your dog weighs. The medium for my dog is a good fit with out sliping. Had I gone with a large I wouldn't have been able to adjust it right and the back strap was right under his doggie junk, so if he peed I would have to wash it. The back strap should NOT ride right under the doggie junk, cause chaffing is bad, person or dog.
Write your question here...I have a 14 lb. Norfolk Terrier that loves to hike. He has a Ruffwear life preserver. Do you think an XS would be too small?
My 60 pound Alaskan Husky fits this pack very well. The adjustable straps make for a semi-custom fit. The pack balances very well even while the dog runs. If you want a pack, this is the one.
Here's my 95 pound Rott/shep/rador sporting the medium -- he's right at 36" girth and it fit him well when adjusted most of the way out. Plenty of room for a couple kanteens and chow. He loved carrying his supplies, and the straps seemed comfortable and held the pack on securely.
My dog loves hiking, and throwing her backpack on gives her a great job on the trail. On overnight trips, the pack caries her food, dish and water, and on day trips, she caries our beer! Also doubles as a dog luggage bag for weekend trips out to friends places.
Hi there, I found a handy-dandy size chart online for this particular product-- the Ruffwear approach pack. According to the info, you should measure your dog's girth at the widest part of the ribcage. Hope this helps. Cheers!size dog girth† capacityXXS 12"-19" 30-48 cm 122 cu. in. 2 LXS 17"-24" 43-61 cm 305 cu. in. 5 LS 21"-30" 53-76 cm 549 cu. in. 9 LM 26"-36" 66-91 cm 732 cu. in. 12 LL 32"-48" 81-122 cm 976 cu. in. 16 L
This is the first dog pack I have had. I researched a lot of them and always came back to the Ruffwear. The sternum and chest strap was perfect for keeping the pack straight on my pall. She ran, jumped, tore through the under brush and was chest deep in snow. The pack did not slip or cause hot or rub spots. It appeared very comfortable for her to wear and it was easy to access the compartments. It was very easy to set up and adjust the straps to fit appropriately.
Between the size M Webmaster Harness first strap (that goes around dog's chest) and the size M Approach Pack first strap, the Approach strap is TWO INCHES SHORTER. They are both described as 'performance fit'. So this pack would have fit if Ruffwear kept the dimensions the same - their size M says they are the same, but not so.
I bought the M (26in-36in) since my dog's girth is 31in and it does NOT in any way fit him! It is a good 4in too short around the widest part of his ribcage so I can't fasten it into place. The second fastener near the rear of his body closes just fine. I have the web harness size M and that fits him fine, he is a boxer/ridgeback mix, 70lbs., so the M should have fit him. Ruffwear's site suggests sizing down if in between sizes, but I would size UP. The tag says, 'performance fit' so maybe that explains the difference. The quality of this pack otherwise looks great and I own a lot of Ruffwear products but I have to give a low rating for the misinformation and inconvenience. Here's hoping the L works...
