    You are DJ Shred.

An icy whirlwind threatens to throw you off the lift as the chair swings back and forth. The temperature has just dropped below 0. You are just thanking your sweet stars for remembering to bring your industrial mittens when ... your mom calls. Do you answer and risk frostbite or ignore the woman that put you on this earth? Thanks to Outdoor Tech's Chips you won't have to choose. Chips are a Wireless Bluetooth Helmet Audio system that fits inside any helmet with an audio liner. Someday you'll tell your grandchildren how you had to take off your brain bucket, gloves, and dig in your pocket to answer a call or change music, without having to deal with annoying cords, either.

Each headphone sports a large button easily pressed from outside the helmet. These buttons can answer a call from your Bluetooth device, pause/play, raise/lower the volume, and skip tracks of your music. Able to operate in -4 degrees, these wireless monsters go up to 120 decibels and feature A2DP for high quality stereo sound. A USB charger, back-up cable, and carry pouch are included as well. In addition to freezing temperatures, Chips can handle sweat and water without flinching. Warm hands, warm head, music control, and talking to your mama. Any questions?

    Crisp sound hands free!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm an audiophile and have been looking for the right bluetooth speakers for my helmet, and was very excited to try these out.

The sound is crisp in the high and mids, I listed to FLAC on my android and it sounds pretty good in these. I just wish they had a bit more low end.

Easy to use and the battery lasts a long while too!

    Very pleased :)

    No Wires!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've had several Outdoor Tech headphones in the past, and these are no different. Being able to answer phone calls, easily pause/start music and adjust volume, all without taking out your phone is pretty cool. The only flaw with these is the sound quality isn't the best, but it wins in so many other areas it really doesn't matter. Highly recommended! PS - Battery lasts all day on the slopes, so don't worry about battery life.

    Don't buy!

I ordered these with high hopes. Skiing with no ear buds and wires would be great. Out of the box they look good. Once connected the volume was unequal. Then the connection would cut out. And I was just sitting on the couch with my helmet on. I couldn't really even listen to a song. I tried walking around the house and the connection was even worse. I can't imagine that they would work at all when skiing. Thanks Backcountry for taking them back. These are cheap junk and have no business being for sale on this site.

      two years and counting!

these are dope!!! easy to sync to my iPhone. simple to control. excellent sound. fit perfectly inside my smith vantage helmet. Small issue, of which I am totally to blame, I broke the little tab/plug that covers the jack off by opening it a little too for exuberantly:/ Ohh well, luckily that doesn't affect how they function. Amazing product!

        Love these, but Bluetooth issue!

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Hi, I absolutely loved these ear chips when I bought them last year, but on this ski trip the right side chip won't play any sound while using on Bluetooth. They are fully charged, and both sides work when wired, but that defeats the purpose of the Bluetooth! Is there a way to fix this or can they be replaced? Thank you so much!

Way better than what I'm used to!

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am used to wearing the stock headphones that come with the iPod, so yes, these are heavenly compared to those. They work great, are reliable, and you forget that they're even there. The sounds is great, and they fit great in my Smith Variant helmet. I got my wife and brother a pair and they love them too. Battery lasts all day without a problem. I especially like them for ski touring -- it distracts you from being tired.

        Wired or wireless?

The description was wrong it's said Bluetooth and I bought it, but I received a wired unit. It was not my fault but Backcountry suggested me to return it. So, the description was a lie. I expected to backcountry support better this kind of errors.

          These Are Great!

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Upgraded to BT and love the cord cutting. These are amazing, just done right! Super easy to connect, buttons are easy to use and functional, sound quality is solid as well, when taking a phone call the mic works great. My only gripe is that the function to skip back a song doesn't work. My friend has the same issue but at least he can get his to go, you have to hit the bottom just right on time. I haven't been able to yet, but I'll really never skip back so not a huge issue. I would buy these again!

          CHIPS Bluetooth Speakers Work Well

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am really enjoying these CHIPS Bluetooth Ski Helmet Speakers. The controls are quite easy to use and intuitive. Minor challenges include centering your gloved/mittened finger over each earpiece to activate the button. You can feel a small click when you've hit the mark. Also, you do have to remember the control functions but this is honestly quite easy. The sound quality, both for recorded sounds and for phone use, is EXCELLENT. Battery lasts all day. I do recharge after each day of skiing, but it might last more than a single day depending on use. No problems with temperature sensitivity.
Only minor complaint is that the firmware is not upgradable. I bought new CHIPS for my family this year and the audible functions are now words rather than tones. Would be nice to be able to upgrade my CHIPS to this better function but not a big deal. Highly recommend overall.

          Easy to use

          • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Really easy to use. Very simple 2 button design, one on each ear, both easily to manipulate while skiing with gloves on. I recently called my friend while we were trying to meet on the mountain to find out where he was. He mentioned he was currently skiing over, I totally forgot he had this audio system and was astounded at how good he sounded and how seamlessly they seemed to operate. They fit good in a smith helmet.

Great for 1st season, not working now

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These headphones worked wonderfully and were such an amazing addition to my ski gear last year. Everyone I was with wanted a pair when I told them about them. Easy to use, long charge and great sound. However, when getting ready for this ski season, they don't seem to work. The red light does not come on (even after the 30 minute window goes by that the troubleshooting guide that came with it suggests). It does charge and works when tested however even when turned off and not in use, does not hold a charge for a few hours. Let alone with skiing. I have charged for full length of time recommended each time, even bought a second charging cord to see if that was the problem and each ski day I was left without music on the mountain. These headphones were expensive and I was happy to pay it and loved them last year....didn't realize it wouldn't work for more than one season. Quite disappointed.

I have been in touch with customer service at outdoor tech and they have been timely and extremely helpful. I'm changing my stars to four due to the ease of customer service support and helping me fix this problem. Going to give these another shot!

          Two Years, Still Going Strong

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love these chips. They are crazy-easy to use. You just press your ear flap, and you can start, stop, skip, raise volume, answer a call and even access Siri. You just hold the left ear, then press the right ear, to activate Siri. So, essentially, you can even text and read your most recent text, without touching your phone. Such luxury!

I have had zero issue, with these. I have had a few customers that have had a speaker go out. These are warrantied for a year, so they just get swapped out for another pair. The issue presents itself right away, not down the road. So, it seems like it's more of an occasional factory issue, and not a durability issue. I didn't downgrade the stars, because electronics in all brands, have issues like this, especially when taken into extreme conditions. My iphone shuts down, due to the cold, every time I ski. My chips never have.

The mic is very good. I have no idea where it is, and how people can hear me, but they do and they say I sound loud and clear. The charging port is on the chips, so you have to charge it while it's in your helmet, or take them out. That is maybe a downside. I don't mind having my helmet on the floor while a sleep, though, so not a biggy for me.

          Great Product

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought a new helmet hoping I wouldn't have as much pressure on my ears when I wore my Beats headphones, this wasn't the case. Once I decided I most likely wouldn't find a helmet that fit well and allowed me to use my headphones, I started looking for an alternative. Having bought the Smith Vantage helmet, someone recommended I look into these headphones since I would still have the bluetooth convenience which was most important to me. These have exceeded my expectations. I have used these about ten times on the mountain and have had no issues. The only thing that I was slightly disappointed in is the battery life. I haven't had issues with connectivity or any other issues others have had, should I have any issues, I will provide an update.

Good Move Picking Up These Bad Boys

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Picked these up to put in my Giro Ski Helmet. They are amazing, sound great, easy to use comfortable, and easily last a day on the slopes! I got these a couple months ago and use them 2-3 times a week and they are as good as new! Nothing beats making turns under a blue sky with fresh snow and some great music motivating you. Pick some up!

          Very nice

          • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Gave these as a gift and was very pleased with everything as they were installed in a Smith helmet without any issue.
Syncing was very easy and the instructions were simple. Overall it seems they are pretty nice,.

          Great product

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Have now used my new Outdoor Tech chips Bluetooth speakers in my Giro Nine ski helmet 4 times in cold, windy, snowing conditions and have had no problems. Never had to take my gloves off. I'm not much of a tech guy or audiophile but they worked great. Listened to Pandora all day. No problems answering or even making phone calls while on the lift. Microphone works fine according to those I had to talk to. Best of all, real easy to install and work perfect right out of the box. I would buy these again!

          Really disappointed

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I am supremely disappointed with these headphones. I scouted them online for months last year and on impulse, at the end of the season, decided to spring for a pair at one of the ski shops on the mountain. I tested them out and was really happy with sound quality, volume, etc and best of all, no need for wires to get tangled up in the rest of my gear. I then put them (inside the helmet) in storage for the summer.
As I took out all my gear for the new season last week and was testing everything, I came to my sweet new headset and it wouldn't turn on. I plugged them in with a wire and they produce sound just fine, so I came to the conclusion they needed to be charged. I charged them over night attached to my computer and they still do not turn on (I hold the right earpiece and no sound is produced to indicate it is trying to pair) and my bluetooth aware devices (tablet and phone) do not detect the headset at all. I ordered a new charging cable and tried again (charging 12+ hrs) and still no luck. I basically ended up with a really expensive wired pair of headphones which is the opposite of why I bought these in the first place.
This is a huge disappointment and it's been so long since I purchased them, I can't bring them back for return (it was April 2015). Feels like I just threw away $200 at the end of the season. Really bummed, cause I was stoked to give these headphones a workout on the slopes this year.

          Signal disappears while skiing

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Bought these and a new Smith helmet- was stoked on them and tested them out at home walking around, worked great. Also worked great on the lift, but the second you get moving downhill, the signal skips and doesn't come back until you are stationary again. Tried switching my phone to different pockets, turned the Chips and phone on and off, cleared any other Bluetooth connections- same thing. Found myself pausing the tunes when getting off the lift, which is easy to do with the touch of one button. Anyone else have this problem?

          Unanswered Question

I see some reviews that go back to 2014, so have there been any technological updates like finding a solution to the loss of signal, better battery life, or anything really?

          Unanswered Question

Hi, perhaps I should have posed the review I just wrote as a question, just realized..... I have absolutely loved these ear chips since buying them last year, and raved about them! But on the ski trip I am on, I charged them up again and now the right hand chip has no sound when using Bluetooth. I can get sound in both when it's wired, but that defeats the purpose I got them for to have the Bluetooth control..... Can you help me out here with either troubleshooting or replacing them? I've only used them about a dozen times. Thank you, -Carol

Where is the volume/skip track/pause button(s) and how do you access them on the fly?

The speakers had been working fine. But I accidentally hit forget this device on my IPhone. Since that time I have not been able to pair my speakers to my IPhone. I have tried powering both devices down and restarting. I have tried hitting the reset button on the speakers with a paper clip. The speakers will power on and off, but they do not connect with my IPhone anymore. Any suggestions?

          Hey Rickie,

I think it should be pretty simple to get your Chips paired with your phone again. From the off position, hold down the Right MFB (Multi-Function Button) until you see the light on the unit start to flash red-blue-red-blue. On the newer versions of the Chips, you’ll also hear an audio prompt that says “Pairing.” Once this happens, go to your phone’s Bluetooth settings and search for the Chips. You should be able to select the Chips and pair them. The flashing red-blue-red-blue light should change to blinking blue and you may also hear “paired or connected.”

Please note that the Chips do not have a reset button, the hole you are seeing is most likely the microphone.

I hope this solves your problem! If you continue to have any issues, please contact our master tech guru, Christian, at 310-677-0190.

Hey there, are these compatible with Shred Half Brain helmets? Thanks!

There are two wires included. Their function is clear. There is also a 90 degree connector with no wires. What is it's function?

Will these fit inside a Troy Lee Designs D3 full face helmet?

As others have stated, the charging side speaker does not work via Bluetooth. It works fine with the cord but defeats the purpose of it being wireless. What's the deal? Seems to be a common problem with these things. Had I read these reviews first, I would've bought something else.

i love my new discs, what about after i put the helmet away, is there any type of mounting devise so i can use my discs year round? or will i have to wear my ski helmet on the beach?

Are these compatible with the Smith Holt helmet ?

I'm trying to determine if I want these or the Skullcandys. Unfortunately I think I'll get some biased feedback asking on the OT product page, but I thought I'd check and see if anyone compared the two models before me. Also I can't find much information about how the Skullcandys work online.

I think the feature that I like the most about the OTs is that all the functionality is in two buttons. Granted you have to memorize the different touches, but I imagine having each earpiece being its own button will make it easier to operate with gloves on. The one downside I see is that the OTs don't allow you to go back a track, only forward, but thats only a minor set back.

Any additional feedback between the two units would be appreciated. Thanks.

          You CAN skip BACK!

(It's the three second rule on the left earpiece.)

I haven't tried the Skullcandy version, but I'm so happy with these I could shout it from the mountain tops.

The sound quality leaves me wanting for nothing.

Making and receiving calls is perfect. They hear me very well, and vice versa.

Using your clumsy glove-fingers to turn it off, while you're with people, is priceless.

(Nobody wants to wait for you to fumble with your music situation.)

          And 4th:

You'll learn the functions in one run.

          (Bous Siri feature:

Hold down the left earpiece, then press the right until it beeps.)

Hit me up if you have anymore questions.

will these fit into a POC helmet other than the receptor? I am trying to get them as a gift for my brother, but can not find an audio liner that is compatible with his POC helmet. Do they need the liner?

My volume is barely audible despite turning up the volume on my phone and all the way on the speakers. What is wrong? How can I turn this up? I get the beep from the left speaker that it is up all the way..
