  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 6' 3"
    Weight: 175 lbs
    Size Purchased: XL

Used it on this last trip to Brianhead. Hiked alot and never overheated. Did get warm, but stayed dry inside jacket. Great temp range too, -6F to 20F and was good with fleece. Love pocket setup for phone on outside with net to hold it and wallet inside. Attached to Vanguard pants and was great in the pow

Have any more photos of this jacket in the real world?

Hey, No I don't, this is my friend in the photo. I do have the Inertia jacket which is the same cut and features as the Vanguard but with a different goretex material.
Do you have any questions about this jacket? Or I can supply some photos of the jacket I have.
Mountains are the only real world I know anymore....

Dominates the slackcountry

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This has been my first jacket from Outdoor Research and I am very impressed with both the design and build quality. I will order more from these folks in the future. The jacket is sold as a "sidecountry" jacket and rightly so .With the fleece backing this jacket is surprisingly warm, at least for the winters here in Utah, and can be worn with just a base layer. When a storm does roll in you can throw on a layer then zip on the hood and cinch down the coat in the well placed drawcords. While this jacket is not a super lightweight packable touring shell I found myself wearing this over other jackets on any cloudy or questionable weather days. The best part about this jacket is the placement of the pit zips, which allows me to vent more and remove the jacket less which leads to more time skiing.
I am 5'7" 150lbs and wear a size large. It is a bit big on me and I could most likely wear a medium.

I personally like spending my money with retailed that offer a lifetime warranty and will work with you to fix the garment if an issue arrives.

Good jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

I wish the fit was a little tighter but I guess I can deal with it being a little baggy.

I'm 6'2 195 lbs and a large is baggy

Wind gets through the front zipper

Other than that great jacket

Would give it 6 stars if...

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a great jacket. I've had several Arc'Teryx jackets and the versatility and features that this one has beats them hands down. The chest to waist "pit zips" do a much better job of regulating body temperature and the fabric takes a beating and keeps on kicking a**. The ThumbDrive wrist cuffs really work and that is a feature that I will be looking for from now on. As much as I love the zip off hood feature, I really wish they made it as a "stow-able" option. (I regularly leave it at home and today I really wish I had it with.)

Hi I'm considering this jacket and was wondering how warm it is as a layer by itself, is the fleece very thick and warm? Would it be sufficient by itself with a base layer in -10 weather? Il certainly layer up as it gets colder. And how is it for size? I'm 5'9 and 135 would I take a medium or a large? I have the Axiom in a med and it is a very close fit, almost too small.
Thanks for the advice
4 it's an awesome product and I love OR

The fleece is more of a thin layer, I wear it with a 2 layers (under armor heat gear, and smartwool mid weight) here in the PNW where it doesn't get super cold (20s)
This shell is a more "standard\freeride" fit, Longer and wider than the axiom. I can't layer much under an axiom like you say, but this I can easily. I have both jackets in Large(6'2" 185) For a great insulated goretex jacket, the OR Access is my cold day goto. Check it out for sure!
Hope that helped

Thanks a lot! That's the other option I was looking at, you've definitely cleared things up.

By the way, how was the Axcess for sizing? Want to make the right choice.

Responded on

So I wear OR jackets in a large. I'm 6'2" 180. Long arms. there is plenty of room to layer with the fit. Lots of room in the body and perfect length in sleeve and back. If I wear any taller the XL would be my option, but its much bulkier in the body.

This jacket is great; slightly baggier style but still remarkably feels like a well cut coat when wearing it - high quality, definitely element proof - probably a little heavy for extended touring but perfect for side country.

Add it to my Xmas list

Saw this at last years OR show and want it so bad. Just moved to Denver from Portland and don't need the bomber Gore-Tex waterproof jacket anymore. The Vanguard had a buttery soft feel, and even though it's not seam taped it will be fine for snow and even ok if it rains a little. I love the position of OR's pit zips, they allow more air flow and even provide access to the inside of the jacket for when I'm skinning. Only 4 stars because I don't own it yet!

**Fully Seam taped 3L Goretex, but its a softshell! So comfortable
