Don't cook without reflector. The efficiency boost is amazing and the weight is nominal. Pack it, set it up and use it. Cook in cold temperatures without it and you could go hungry, or thirsty. Spend any duration in the alpine and you could run out of fuel.

Good To Have When Necessary

By:

Good to have when high wind conditions warrant use. A strategically placed rock wall will also suffice but is more problematic. Continuous folding will eventually cause tears. Try using heavy duty aluminum foil as a replacement. Cover the exposed portion of the plastic pump in case of flare-ups & heat build-up.

Try "rolling" it, instead of folding. Unrolls quickly and easily fits in a small pot along with the stove, Spork and pot lifter. I used to fold mine, which meant it didn't fit in the pot and was unruly and on its way to wearing out. Rolling-rocks!

Must have

They are made to the perfect dimensions that reflect heat back towards the pot or w/e you have on it, but at the same time giving the stove just enough oxygen to run at the most efficient level. You could make these yourself, but it is just as easy to buy them and believe it or not MSR put a fair amount of detail and thought into the design. It took them a few years to perfect it, but take advantage of that and help your stove cook quicker and last longer.

I am truly a big fan of backcountry and have no desire to hurt anyones 'bottom line'...that being said, I am an avid backpacker and carry several neatly folded sheets of aluminum cooking foil. a few pennies of disposable investment which has multiple uses and re-uses. easy to form and shape. light weight and simple to carry.

Replacement

By:

Just picked up this set to replace the original as it was looking a little shabby. Definately makes a difference in heating time even if you don't have a lot of wind to deal with. Just good accessories to make your stove burn better.

Can you use it with a Pocket Rocket stove?

It is possible to use this with a canister stove. I have seen it done before, but you have to constantly check the canisters temperature. You can simply touch it with your hand, if it is warm to the touch remove the windscreen temporarly, and if you don't... well it will go BOOM!!!

No, it cannot. Using a heat reflector and/or windscreen with a canister-top stove can dangerously heat the canister and cause it to explode.

In addition, it is not tall enough to make a real difference with the pocket rocket. To increase efficiency with the PR, you might want to look into a MSR "XPD" heat exchanger. Very light, and very effective.

It helps

This helps in the wind / rain / cold. It increases the performance of the stove and makes for faster cooking times. I have had trouble with refolding this and getting it to stand right and effectively surround the stove. It is a lot harder to get the thing to 'close' like the picture shows. I usually have 1-2 inches of space where the 2 ends come together. I use this windscreen every time I use my stove.

Yup, It works!

I got the windscreen with my EGX EX stove.

After figuring out that when you draw in the windscreen so that you have less than a half an inch between the windscreen and pot, it really speed up boil/cook time!

This stove works with both the Liquid Fuel or Wind Pro Canister Stove models from MSR. You could use this windscreen with most LIQUID FUEL STOVES, NOT CANISTER STOVES!Agree with the above except you can use it with the Wind Pro canister stove, only because the stove is separate from the fuel canister.

SPEEDS UP YOUR DINNER !

By:

This wind shield and heat deflector really shortens your cooking time. I bought one only to realize that one was included with my MSR Stove. If you place a rock wall around the cooking area you will further protect the stove parts from being lost in heavy wind gusts !
