- Q & A
As rugged as me
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I wear this harness to route set at a gym. It is comfortable, strong and it fits me very well. I am skinny with narrow hips and wear a small woman's harness. The waist belt is not the easiest to double back, and I always need to completely undo the waist to get into and out of the harness. I weight all the loops (belay and gear) heavily and often asymmetrically, but the loading nicely distributes itself.
This is my favorite harness to spend many hours hanging in with a heavy load.
I really wanted us to work out....
It's a classy looking harness being mostly black with subtle detailing--just what I was looking for instead of the super girly brightly colored ones. However the way the waist adjusts shifts the gear loops around toward the back if it's not cinched as tight as it can go. Also, the front two gear loops stick out nice and high, which is a little weird. They push down easily though and would probably stay down with the weight of any gear.
I have a really narrow waist with some very wide hips, and I found this to be uncomfortable. I also purchased a couple Black Diamonds to try along with it (and send back the ones that didn't work out), and those are shaped much better for us with wider hips proportionally. Both had very similar shape, so I'm assuming all Women's BDs will continue that shape.
I got a small expecting it to be pretty close fit, but there was plenty of extra room--just the right amount. It seemed bullet proof and like it would hold up to absolutely anything, it just didn't fit my above my hips comfortably.
I absolutely love this harness, it has great padding on the lower back and thighs...very comfortable! Also, it honestly just feels safer, I don't know if it's just the name on the harness, hahaha, but it's super thick and durable feeling, yet still allows full range of motion and isn't limiting at all. Excellent Harness!!!
Comfortable & Supportive
I love that this harness has so many additional safety features on it, like the dual belay loops and rated gear loops. It doesn't dig into your legs and cut off circulation, thanks to all of its adjustments. However, it does take a bit of time to get everything set just right to fit your body.
If you're in between size measurements, I suggest going down to the lower size. I originally bought a medium, but had to exchange it for the small so I had enough free webbing to tighten the waist.
I haven't taken it outside yet for any multi-pitch and hanging belays (two of the primary reasons I selected this harness), but my climbs/belays in the gym have been super comfortable.
Thanks Metolius for a harness that minimizes possible user errors and Backcountry for retailing it!
Piece of Mind
Prior to using this harness I was wearing a lighter weight harness, with non-adjustable leg loops by wild country. I purchased that one 10 years ago and have outgrown it.
I was debating between replacing it with another lightweight harness, or a harness that was bomber and comfy.
It basically came down to deciding between the Arcteryx r280 or the Metolius safe-tech deluxe.
Because I climb in Yosemite, I imagined the Arcteryx, being such light and thin material would wear down easily when rubbing against granite when trying to scoot up chimneys. So I went with Metolius.
The first time I put it on, It felt cumbersome and heavy. I was so used to my old wild country one. But, after wearing yesterday in Yosemite Valley, I was much impressed. It was comfortable, and best of all I felt secure, as if I had a piece of armour on.
I don't mind gaining a few ounces for that feeling of confidence when having it on. I also like the fact that the gear and haul loops are full strength.
Not a review but a comment
My rating is for the older version of the Metolius Safe Tech Deluxe Women's harness. I bought this harness to replace my older and well-used version of this harness. The biggest (literally) attraction are the overlapping gear loops (which make a big difference on an XS sized harness). Haven't tried it out yet but just wanted to comment that there are two belay loops, which was a nice surprise. Seems a bit hard to see that in the main image above.
Edit: Good - they changed the image for a better view of the harness.
Do the Belay loops nest (fit inside one another)
The two belay loops do not nest inside each other. It is most useful to have two belay loops on some multi pitch and aid climbing routes but is not necessary for standard sport or trad climbing.
