Stay completely warm while you walk across town in frigid temperatures, and don't worry if a few snow flurries start to fall.

Those frigid walks into town and annoyingly cold drives to work aren't a problem for you anymore thanks to the Marmot Women's Montreal Down Coat. The 700-fill down insulation works its heat magic while making sure the jacket feels light as a feather on your torso, and Marmot's proprietary Down Defender treatment resists water so the down won't lose it's warmth due to just a few snow flurries. The polyester shell has a DWR coating that also resists water. A plush lining slides over your work attire like a glove, and it feels so soft against your skin that you'll wish you could work in this coat all day.

The Montreal's insulated hood keeps your head nice and toasty so you don't have to squish your hair down with a beanie, and you can remove both the hood and its fur ruff when you don't need them. Marmot lined the internal cuffs with micro fleece, and the front pockets also have micro fleece for extra hand coziness. The internal zippered pocket stores small items like lip balm while the drop pocket holds all your bigger items like your gloves, beanie, or phone.

    Great looking and warm coat

    • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit:Runs small

I bought this coat for my wife as a birthday present. She is 5'6" 115lbs with an athletic build. I purchased a size small in the silver onyx color. The coat fits very trim but comfortable when wearing a light thin sweater. When wearing a heavy oversized sweatshirt the coat is tight in the upper chest and arms but still wearable. When wearing either the thin sweater or heavy sweatshirt the jacket never looks bulky. The color is fantastic as are the features of the jacket. The jacket is noticeably more substantial and warmer than my wife's Patagonia down mid thigh parka. We were looking for warm winter jacket that could be worn with a just long sleeve shirt or thin sweater underneath and still keep you warm...and look trim and fashionable. So my wife likes the fitted look of the small but if you prefer wearing bulky sweaters you might want to size up. Since receiving the jacket, my wife has worn it walking around in 25 F windy weather with no issues. The jacket arrived just after the 2016 Washington DC snowpocalypse but I'm sure it would have weathered that storm no problem. Great job Marmot!

    Warmest Coat I've Ever Had

I love this coat. It is incredibly warm and comfortable. Stood outside in 7degree weather for 4 hours and the only part of me that was cold were my feet. I love the onyx color and ability to zip off hood. Runs small in chest and arms. I'm 5'7 125 pounds and opted for the small because I like the fitted look but would probably be more comfortable in the medium. Just more room when reaching forward or above my head, etc. I love this jacket...super warm.

Short sleeves, with internal knit cuff.

Too bad, I've been wanting this jacket for years. I gave it to my daughter who is a little smaller than me. I'm not particularly tall, about 5'8" and 130 lbs. Very warm, great hood in the winter winds, but the arms weren't working for me, I couldn't layer anything underneath! Medium works perfectly for her, 5'5", 125lbs.

    Wife wanted this

    • Familiarity:I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit:True to size

My wife was ready to upgrade from her pea jackets and other puffies to something longer with class. This is what she chose,. I bet her that she would only wear this a few times and she has proven me wrong. She wears this jacket every where, every day. It is very warm, and looks great. The material is excellent and not a heavy down so she doesn't feel like this is a thick winter jacket. Even though it protects her like one. She likes the cuffs on the sleeves , and the options for pockets. When we've been out on colder nights she doesn't want to deal with a bag so she loads up her pockets with the essentials. She has been very pleased with this jacket and the length is perfect, coming down to about mid-thigh.

    Very Happy With This Coat

I'm 5'11" tall and sleeve length is often a concern for me. This coat is great! I wore it this morning through 11 degree weather on my commute to work, and it kept me warm. The sleeves are a perfect length, and the coat isn't bulky, considering it's a parka. After reading the reviews, I bought a Large, because I like to have some room for layering. A Large works well for me. I am very happy with this coat.

    Very Happy With This Coat

    Good purchase

I think it's true to size. I'm about 5'7" and 140lbs, medium is fit with enough room for a sweater. Falls mid thigh so it's long enough to keep you warm and not too long to get in the way. I chose navy blue, it looks a little darker than it shows on the website but still lovely :) I haven't tried it in extremely cold day yet, thought I would wear this on my trip to Russia in Feb... Real test... And I'll report back.

      Good purchase

Possibly the best coat I've ever owned

      • Familiarity:I've used it several times
      • Fit:Runs small

This coat is so comfortable, warm, and extremely well made. It runs small as others have said - I usually wear a small but bought a med and it fits fine. It's attractive and light and stylish, yet very warm. The faux fur is nice and zips off. I got the black and it's a very pretty coat. The black is a soft black that almost looks dark brown in some lighting and then the soft lining is jet black.
I've had this coat for one week and I don't know how I have lived without it. Perfect for New England winter.

Kudos to Backcountry, delivered in two days as promised!

      so cozy

So far, I have nothing but great things to say about this jacket. It's so warm and really the perfect fit. The cut is very flattering (in my opinion) versus other long down jackets. I have a larger bust, so sometimes puffy jackets dont look that great, but this one is the exception. I really like how the fur is removable and there is an inside breast pocket. Its the perfect length, not too long, not too short- it hits me mid thigh. I cant wait to wear this baby to work, out to dinner, or a night on the town. I bought this in a SMALL. I think it fits true to size compared to other Marmot jackets.

      Better than expected!

Ive debated for years on a good winter jacket. This one was worth the wait! I'm 5'4" 120lbs. I ordered a small. It fits perfect with enough room for a sweater under it. i usually wear small-med shirts. It hits at mid thigh and has a nice feminine shape, you don't look like a marshmallow and the sleeves are the right length. The black looks slightly brown to some eyes, but not a concern for me. An added plus... the warm soft velvety material inside the pockets and on the inside upper part of the jacket is amazing. I hate the cold, and this jacket will for sure keep me warm.

      700 fill down WOW

Falls right about mid-thigh (versus too short=cold or too long=dorky)

Pretty fur hood to keep out the wild wind up north.

The video model is 5-9 130 pounds.

I am 5-9 120 pounds and I got a small. It fits fine. The bust is a little tight (im a 32C) and the waist and hips are a little big (im 26 waist 36 hips).

The sleeves are a little short but I am used to it. There isn't much options for tall clothing so I just deal with it.

It is a little boxy but it is flattering enough. It could have been more feminine hourglass shape but I still love it.

These are minor I just thought I would mention.

I am just so happy with this upgrade! Super warm keeps out the wind and the cold! And very affordable!

      Great for Chicago Winters

      • Familiarity:I've used it several times

      • Size Bought: MEDIUM

Chicago is miserable when it gets cold, and I have gone through countless coats that were all expensive but just were not keeping me warm. Finally I found the perfect coat! Its not too heavy or puffy, but something about it keeps you wonderfully warm. Last week it was in the 30's, and I wore it with a long sleeve tshirt and leggings, and was toasty warm. The fit is a little odd, and the sleeves are kind of short on someone my height. I bought a medium, which is what I usually wear, and in all honesty I could have boughten the large. Its fine in the waist, but the shoulders are a bit tight, and doesnt allow a whole lot of movement. I am still able to wear a big sweater without feeling like Im packed in, but if I was to do anything that required a lot of movement with my arms then I might get frustrated. Overall, an amazing purchase for the price! Will buy again once this one wears out!

      A thoughtfully designed coat

Despite our unseasonably warm fall in New York, I have had a few occasions to wear my Marmot Montreal coat and wanted to share my thoughts. I am 5'0", 120 lbs, 32DDD chest with broad shoulders and bigger frame for a short person, and I got the medium, which fits perfectly. I have room to layer underneath, but it is not oversized with just a shirt or light sweater. The coat has a nice shape, even with layers underneath, and does not make you look like a sack of potatoes. While it does not have a way to cinch in the waist, which concerned me a little before I tried it on, it does not need one.

On me, the coat is just about knee length. When the sleeves are pulled all the way down the fleece cuff comes to the end of my wrist, and the down part comes a bit over my hands. It hasn't been glove weather yet, but I expect no gap between the coat and the gloves.

Marmot did a really nice job with finishing this coat - no loose threads, no leaking down, zippers work nicely, and full of nice details. I love the furry fleece lining. My last coat (a Mountain Hardwear Downtown Coat from about 5 years ago) had that too, and it was one of the reasons I bought this coat. The handwarmer pocket linings are exceptionally soft, and I appreciate having two breast pockets (one that zips and one that doesn't). The faux fur is not really my style, but I've left it on because, as others have noted, although the hood is very deep with the fur on, it is a bit shallow with it off. I may still take it off, we'll see how it feels when we get into hood weather.

The coldest it has been around here is 35F, closer to 25 with wind chill, and I was warm. Of course, most down coats will keep you warm to 35, but I expect I will be warm in this coat at colder temperatures as well. I was impressed with the wind resistance. As I found with my old coat, a longer coat will keep your torso warmer than your legs, but it's still better than a short jacket.

I got the Midnight Navy, and I really like it. My last two coats were black, and the blue is a nice change. It's a purpler navy blue, and looks great with jeans, but is also a neutral enough color that it looks fine with the rest of my pants, black included

So I haven't been able to test the Marmot Montreal coat in really cold weather yet, and while I expect it will keep me toasty, I'll update this review if not. Otherwise, I am very pleased with this coat. I did a lot of research before I bought it, and I really believe this is the best of the medium length down coats available this year.

Update: I continue to be enormously impressed with this coat. It's 12°F this morning with a wind chill of 0°, and I was quite warm! I tend to feel cold easily, so I was wearing a thermal top, long sleeved t-shirt, and lightweight fleece sweatshirt, but I probably could have gone with one layer fewer. That notwithstanding, the fit was fine with three layers.

I've tried the coat with and without the faux fur: I like the look of it better without, and it's OK warmth-wise, especially with a hat, but it is much warmer with the fur. I have it back on currently.

I am so glad I decided on this coat, especially now that I actually need it!

5'2" 125lbs and got the small. It turned out to be a bit too snugged so I got the medium which was perfect. So so warm and cozy. Wore it with just a camisole on 30°F Utah morning and felt warm as ever. Does not look too poofy. Actually looks pretty stylish. Received many compliments on this coat. The material looks so high end. Love it!

I stood outside in Feb and March of last year watching the spring sport of Lacrosse! Our weather was very cold, windy and uncomfortable. I was so warm in this coat without feeling bulky! The fleece lined pockets are a nice touch. I also wore this coat just about everyday getting in and out of the car. It was effortless... no bunching, bottom zipper helps for comfort on long rides and did not feel bulky.

The Montreal Down Coat is the perfect causal coat. I bought this coat for two reasons: 1. An upcoming modeling gig I have in Minneapolis this winter and 2. Colorado winters/ springs.

The fit does run small. If you are taller and slim, order a size larger.
I normally wear a small and I ordered a size medium to accommodate room in my shoulders and appropriate length for my arms (high water arms are a no-go).
I can't wait to wear this coat and will report back on how it handles the cold weather.

Like the color and length , I chose Onyx. The size fits very well on me, I should also be able to fit in xs with only a thin layer under it. The fleece inside feels so soft ~~~ I think I am going to like it more during this coming winter (more comments coming maybe)

This coat has so many wonderful features. I ordered both the red and blue coats in this style and the longer Montreux. I tested them side-by-side with some coats I had ordered from Lands End. All of the coats were very nicely made and great quality, but the Marmot coats had details that the others didn't have--long, full hood, fleece-lined pockets, internal cuffs, a collar that fit my neck.... and just the general feel of the coat. It is not very cold yet, but I did test each of the coats outside in the cool air. The Marmot coats by far were the warmest and coziest. Just so you know, the colors are not nearly as bright as they show on-line, or even inside my house. I took the coats outside and the navy and red both look MUCH more muted than deep and midnight as they are described, but still lovely. The medium fit perfect with a t-shirt underneath and hit mid-thigh. If I were going to buy this coat I think I would order a size up to allow for extra thickness of my clothing. Overall, it is a fantastic coat. However, I am looking for a coat for bus duty at school, and I am going with the longer Montreux coat so my legs keep warm.

      Coming Back For More

I purchased this coat last year to replace a 600 fill North Face coat that I have had for about 6 years. It did not disappoint! It keeps me warm. I guess there is look of contentment on my face as other women have commented they want my coat! The only color available in my size at that time was the white so I plan to order the Montreaux in a darker color for obvious reasons and because it is a little longer for this winter.

Does anyone think the black looks very chocolate brown?

My wife is busty and hippy- very hourglass shaped. She's generally a 14 or 16, but these brands are hard. Do you think the XXL would fit her?

FYI - I actually just tried this jacket on today. I'm usually a solid Medium. I do like my clothes a bit on the loose side. So I tried the large on and found it a little constricting in the chest area especially. I'm 5-5 and 135 lbs. I'd say this runs small. I decided not to buy it...

I'm 5'8" and 140-145 lbs. I have pretty broad shoulders (swimmer shoulders) and am debating between a medium and large. What would you suggest?

      Best Answer

I am the same height as you and about 5 lbs heavier. I tried both the M and L in a store. The M was very fitted, with only a t shirt on and the shoulders were tight when I put my arms forward. The sleeves were also too short. The L is what I went with and would suggest for you as well.

      Is it packable?

It doesn't pack down really small like many lightweight down coats do. This is a heavier weight coat, and while it will compress somewhat like any down coat will, it's not going to fit in your pocket or small bag.

      DOES IT PACK DOWN SMALL

Not really. It is meant to be worn as a causal coat for work or social outings in really cold temps.

Just my opinion from trying to stuff the jacket into a shopping bag I had nearby: The hood is not packable at all because of the fur and the body of the jacket is slightly compressible.

Does this jacket have wrist protectors (inserts for your hands) at the end of the sleeves? It is hard to tell from the picture?

On another site it says that the down leaks all over the back. Has this been a problem for anyone?

I had concern about this too. I called Marmot and they said there were some issues with some of the coats but not all of them. They apparently guarantee and so does Backcountry. I would check with customer service by phone to see how they would handle this. Not sure how Marmot would handle guarantee.

If I normally wear a medium, would a large...

If I normally wear a medium, would a large look too bulky on me? I'm 5'4", 120lbs. I really want this jacket but can't find it anywhere in medium.
