Description

Retro styling with all the warmth you need at camp.

Beads of moisture dripping off your tent let you know it's time to start your day at camp, and the Marmot Men's Ares Down Jacket is there to warm you, just like your sleeping bag. Stuffed with 800-fill down insulation, this jacket keeps you nice and toasty while you make your morning brew. Polyester mini ripstop wraps all that warmth up with lightweight durability that won't puncture at the slightest pressure.

Retro styling makes the Ares look like a jacket from the seventies, but this down jacket has all the modern designs you love. Like its Angel-Wing Movement that allows unrestricted movement and won't expose your waist when you bend. Elasticized cuffs keep the cold out of your sleeves, and an elastic drawcord makes sure warmth doesn't escape. Hand pockets are there to warm your mitts up while you sip your coffee and enjoy your surroundings.

Pretty nice jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

After owning this jacket for a few months, it's definitely a pretty good buy.

Like another reviewer said, this thing won't keep you super-toasty in sub-zero temps. However, I've found that with just a t-shirt underneath, 30-40 Fahrenheit is no problem. With a few layers, you can squeeze a lot more out of it.

Over the course of the past month or two, it's lost maybe one or two feathers a week that I've noticed; so nothing super alarming there. The fleece-lined pockets are awesome, and always seem to stay warm.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend this jacket if it's around what you're looking to spend and you're not looking for something to use in super-harsh conditions.

I'm 5'11", 155lbs with a pretty athletic build and the Medium fits me perfect and is pretty consistent with other size medium jackets/shells/etc. that I own.

Is this jacket good for layering under a shell?

Hi,
This model is definitely slim enough to go under a shell on a super cold day! It will be quite warm

Great lightweight coat

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size

This is a really excellent looking and feeling product. However it's just not going to keep you warm sub-freezing unless you're the Human Torch. It's super lightweight - yeah, the loft is high but when there's three feathers in the coat, who cares? I'm returning it because I need something that can stand up to a bit of cold and wind, nothing major (20s and 30s and breezy) but this coat won't do that. Someone on another site said they wore this as an outer layer while snowboarding, fell on it, and the coat just took a few to fluff back up. I don't know what coat they were wearing - I wouldn't snowboard in this unless it was 35+ and bright sun, and if you really fell on it you'd probably rip it.

Pockets are fleece lined which is nice, there's an internal drawstring to cinch the waist, which is also nice.

I'm 5'9" 135 with broad shoulders, long arms, and 30" waist and the medium was a good fit.
