Helmet manufacturers have always told us to replace our helmets after a minor crash (even with no visible damage) or when it's more than two years old. Some may argue that it's all a marketing ploy. Then again, we'd rather not gamble on our brains. If it's time to consider a new lid, take a look at all the features of the Louis Garneau Quartz Helmet.
Garneau built the Quartz using In-Mold construction, which means the outer shell has been permanently fused to the impact-absorbing EPS foam liner. This process enhances the effectiveness of both parts. In fact, the fusion process actually reinforces those formerly vulnerable spots around the vents and ribs. It results in a lighter, more durable, and better-ventilated helmet.
The Quartz also makes use of Garneau's MSB (monocoque structural base) technology. The monocoque structural base runs along the perimeter of the helmet, which increases the overall strength and prevents the helmet from shattering on impact. MSB also enabled Garneau to add massive vents to the Quartz, 33 of them to be exact. By comparison, the Giro Atmos, another of our favorites, only has 22 vents. If you ride in hot summer temps, the Quartz is nice option.
The Quartz is mounted on a lightweight, rack-and-pinion adjustment system called Spiderlock SL, whichallows you to adjust the helmet's fit with one hand. Cinched down to even semi-snug, it will keep the helmet from moving around. Additionally, the pads are ergonomically set so the Quartz rests comfortably on your head.
Helmet padding can get really dirty and gross. The Quartz is outfitted with Sealed Airdry padding, which can be removed and washed. A removable visor with plastic plugs to fill in the attachment holes also comes standard. This is good if you'd rather not purchase a different helmet for the road and mountain bike.
