    Lighter than Helium.

Known for their bikes, the Belgians are not to be left out of the accessories market. The Lazer Z1 Helmet is a step above its Helium and Genesis designs with more protection in a lighter design.

The shape of the Z1 moves the shell of the helmet down across the temple zone at the sides of your head for added impact protection. This T-Pro design uses Lazer’s RBS design (rigidity brace system) to hold the shell together in the event of impact to further increase protection to your noggin. At the same time, the front sweeps back up to allow for a full range of vision.

More protection has no benefit with a poor fit, which is why Lazer uses its Advanced Rollsys Adjustment System to ensure that the helmet wraps your head with equal tension from all sides and culminates in a vertically adjustable cradle at the back of your head. The chin strap is adjustable to provide a secure fit as well as comfort.

    Great fitting helmet

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I ordered this and Giro at the same time- kept the Laser. It's a very well thought helmet. Excellent fit, maybe one of the best fitting helmets I have ever owned. It also has a very clever adjustment system with a "roller" on the top of the helmet that can be adjusted while wearing the helmet.

    Lightweight but white/blue looks cheap

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Have cobalt blue bike and this helmet caught my eye. The white outside finish is dull instead of glossy and the blue part is simply blue dyed styrofoam which is ok but it reminded me of standard blue styofoam instead of a unique blue finish to the inside. For the same amount of money, would prefer LG course helmet which is similar in weight and size.

    Lazer Stalwart

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

I've been a Lazer fan for years and wore the Helium and Genesis before moving onto the Z1. I'm a huge fan. Fits my abnormally large head quite well in large and the strap/retention system stays in place and is easy to adjust.

    best fitting helmet I've owned

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: small

I have owned 3 helmets over the past year, and a different helmet every year previously. They included Bell, Giro, Smith, Garneau... But I have to say that the fit to the R1 beat them all. My head can be a little hard to fit, not the size, I'm always a S, they just don't fit perfect, they are ok, but the Z1 set a new level in fit and comfort. I would definitely recommend the Z1!

    *Crash tested*....unfortunately.

I have had the sad experience of testing the Z1 to the limit. In addition to all the other positive remarks below, I would add that it's a winner in the safety department. The extra protection provided by the additional temporal coverage is a great feature, as is the Rigidity Brace System. My Z1 cracked in multiple spots, but stayed in one piece. I walked away (well... i was driven away) with a minor concussion. I would have been interested to see how things might have turned out with the MIPS version now available, but I'm happy to be here : ) I definitely "Put it through the wringer"!

Lazer Z1; no other helmet for me

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've used the Z1 on road and MTB and love it. When temps drop I add the aeroshell and I don't even need a beanie (sometimes ear covers). This is my 2nd Z1, just because I race for different teams on road/MTB/triathlon and wanted a different color scheme. Most recently wore this helmet for Xterra WC in Maui, and it gave me no issues, barely knew it was there.

    Great Helmet

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my favorite helmet to date. I've used all the usual suspects (Giro Aeon, Specialized Prevail) but the Z1 fits better and is a lot cooler. The buckle stays put and the roller thing on the top makes adjustment easy. Top piece of equipment, worth the price.

    Lazer Z1 Helmet Review

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a beautiful well built and detailed helmet. The fit system is well thought out and second to none. Plenty of large vents for good air flow. I am a Giro Aeon believer, but I would give the Lazer a leg up.

    Weight issues

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I just received my size large Z1 in white silver.' Very nice looking and very well made. My large weight is 282 grams on a certified scale-only 12 grams over 270 grams on helmet tag. My 2010 Lazer Genesis weight is 354 grams-nice weight loss! I also weighed a new Giro Aeon large that did not fit me-256 grams. The Aeon does not have the quality look or feel of a Z1. This is my third Lazer helmet . No outside use yet- too cold in Chicago!

    Heavy but nice retention system

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

282g in size M. This is 50g heavier than my Giro Aeon and a mind-blowing 62g heavier than the claimed weight. Weightweenies beware.

Otherwise helmet looks nice and rather round on my head. I like it in Orange (high visibility) but it seems too expensive for what it offers compared to the competition. At this weight/price, I'd get an Evade for real aero benefits.

I have the Prevail and it's a great helmet. I wanted a MIPS helmet though (I've had a few concussions), and bought the Helium.MIPS Which is very comfortable but sort of wide on my head, like a mushroom. I would like the lowest volume, lightest MIPS I can buy. And I think basically, whichever of the Giro Synthe or the Lazer Z1 gets out first will probably end up with my purchase. I know the Synthe is supposed to be on it's way in the fall. It would be nice if they did the Z1 in MIPS.

The Z1 is available in MIPS! It also can integrate a very discreet roadie taillight for emergency rides (used mine yesterday in the early morning). Lifebeam also coming soon so no more chest strap for my heart rate. I choose ventilation over weight discussion any day.

The 3 signs of a good helmet:

    1. Holds your glasses with ease, no painful fumbling around and a secure fit for your shades.

    2. Can't tell it's even there; comfort, comfort, comfort, and adjust-ability.

    3. Looks good; because what are you doing if you don't look good!

This helmet gets on A+ on all fronts. Holds your glasses securely with ease, with no fumbling around or worry about them coming out. (I wear Smith Pivlock's for reference). So lightweight, you hardly even know it's there. And the Advanced Rollsys System on top is easy to adjust to get that perfect custom fit. Finally, this helmet looks good; reeeealll good. Gotta be rolling in style.

Best helmet I've ever owned. Highly, highly recommend.

Does this helmet have the same fit as the lazer o2? I like the shape of the lazer helmets but do not like the straps. Are the straps smaller / softer on the z1?

Is the "Flash Yellow" Lazer z1 color really more "Floro Green" than yellow? Looks more green than yellow on your site? Wondering if if matches my Tarmac stripe?

Does this helmet have an up/down adjustment similar to Giro, Kask, etc? Also, can you comment on the stiffness of the Rollsys dial? It looks as though it would feel loose. I'm just more familiar with the loud ratcheting of Giro adjustments.

    Best Answer

Derek - it does have an up/down adjustment but it does not sit as low on the back of the head as a Giro/Kask helmet does (i've owned them as well). the Rollsys is actually pretty stable on mine, i may make minor adjustments before a ride, but have not had a problem with this during a ride, nothing different then the other helmets i have owned/tried.

Do these fit similar in size to Giro...

Do these fit similar in size to Giro helmets? I currently wear Giro Atmos in medium. Bike shop said these typically run smaller than Giro, so I would most likely wear size Small in the Z1 (they didn't have the helmet in small or medium for me to try on). Can anyone shed some light on what size would be best? Comparing the size charts showed that they are about the same..... Thank you.

Y'know, a bit like the claimed weights sometimes being a little off the actual weights, I have found that the claimed size measurements can be a little off. The other thing is that it doesn't take into account head shape. If I were you, I'd find a store that sells them, try them on there so you know what size and brand fits you better, and then you can order online.

Trying them on in a store and then ordering online is a cheap tactic. Stores have money tied up in their stock. Instead of using the stores money to try helmets, you order the helmets you want to try online and pay the $6.95 return shipping to competitive cyclist.

Anyone know how Oakley Radar's fit on this helmet?

    Best Answer

    Hey Colo Jr. -

Being somebody who wears Radars on almost all of my rides compatibility of them with helmets is very important to me. My coworker Trevor rides the Z1 and I had a chance to try it on. There is definitely plenty of space for your Radars and to fit comfortable. If you have any additional questions on fit or sizing let me know at slukas@backcountry.com.

    Cheers!
