With a hefty 101 square inches of blade area, it's not surprising that the Kialoa Shaka Puu Stand-Up Paddle was named after Mel Puu. After all, this legendary waterman is a big guy, and this is a blade designed specifically for larger, stronger paddlers looking to power through the water. But this paddle's no heavyweight―its carbon construction makes it super-maneuverable and ready to go long distances. In fact, it was the choice of pro paddler Chuck Patterson during his 2008 bid for a $10,000 distance prize.
The large but superlight blade features a carbon fiber wrap over a foam core that practically pops itself out of the water; this 8-5/8in blade with 10 degrees of bend is ideal for quick starts and turns that will position you just right to catch the next wave. The comfortable oval shaft is full carbon for light weight, moderate flex, and good energy transfer. It's topped off with a unidirectional Ergo-T design handle that provides a natural feel in your palm and assists with blade control.
