Yeah, you may have the lightest probe on the planet, but is it truly reliable, strong, and stiff like the K2 Aluminum Avalanche 300cm Probe? Made with durable aluminum components, the Avalanche 300 features a trigger-pull handle and non-slip textured shaft that allow for easy and quick assembly in stressful situations. Its long length helps you locate a buried avalanche victim and identify crevasses, while its one-centimeter markings enable you to collect precise snow-pit data.

  • Stiff, strong, durable aluminum components withstand winter's daily abuse and won't falter when you need them most
  • Secure auto-locking hardware and non-slip textured shaft allow for easy assembly with gloved hands
  • One-centimeter markings for precise recording of snow pit data
  • Trigger pull handle has semi-circular cutouts that nest sections of the probe neatly when not in use

poor design

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This probe has a difficult time retracting when cold. The last section, near the green handle, has an inner shaft which extends out and puts the final tension on the cable running the length of the entire probe. I have had this junction freeze up on me several times. A probe is a piece of equipment that should never fail, and this one consistently does not work for me. I have also had several others try it with similar results. During a multiple burial rescue simulation this past weekend it also did not deploy.

Bomber, works greaet

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use probes extensively in my line of work, from guiding folks, avalanche training and snow science, and this product delivers. It has not worn out after extensive use for 2 seasons and has a smooth and fast set up. It is burly/beefy, meaning it won't deflect when probing. You can't go wrong with this probe!
