The 2016 Roubion 2.0 Carbon S Complete Mountain Bike is the rugged machine of choice for riders looking to rail corners, shred ridge lines, and fly through swoopy berms and big drops with ease. Boasting six inches of plush travel, the Roubion lives for big airs and rough descents, but its neutral geometry and lightweight frame let you turn right around and conquer climbs like it's an XC bike. All of which is a round-about way of noting that the Roubion hits all the right notes for the ultimate enduro race bike. Paired with a Fox Float Performance rear shock, a Rock Shox Pike RCT3 Solo Air fork, SRAM's GX componentry, and Shimano's SLX hydraulic disc brakes, this bike is ready hit the trail.
It’s no secret that we love the Roubion, and it’s fairly easy to see why. First, 27.5in wheels have quickly become the de facto wheel size for riders who push it thanks to the responsive handling and fast rolling speed. Then there’s the 150mm of rear wheel travel, which is primed to mellow harsh trails while the VPP suspension platform lends efficient pedaling on the climbs. For 2016, Juliana updates the suspension links with the top link directly mounted on the top tube and the lower link tucked neatly out of the way to increase stiffness and durability while also smoothing the ride.
These changes allow for a neutral geometry that descends with aplomb and generally rips whether up or down. The head angle has also been adjusted from 67 to 66 degrees, which sounds like a tiny change, but it provides even more high-speed stability than the previous version. At 17in, the chainstays are long enough to keep you centered in the bike, yet short enough to allow the Roubion to carve up turns with ease.
Juliana’s industry-leading carbon fiber construction surfaces in the Roubion Carbon S, although this version uses a slightly lower grade of carbon fiber than the higher-end Carbon CC frame. This requires more material to achieve the same strength, so it carries a bit more weight, but in every other aspect it’s held to the same astoundingly high standards as Juliana’s Carbon CC frames. The upshot is that you get a frame that’s every bit as stiff and strong with a much more palatable price tag.
Both the front and rear triangles are constructed as a whole rather than bonding them together from sub-assemblies. In addition to saving weight, this ensures that the Roubion is as strong as possible because the fibers are uninterrupted by the seams of other construction methods. If you were to cut it in half, you'd find that the inside of the tubes have the same perfectly smooth finish as the outside. (But don't.) That's a result of construction techniques that maximize the compaction of the layers. The benefit is that it's lighter, because any excess epoxy is squeezed from the frame prior to curing, and this ideal degree of compaction optimizes the strength. Strength and stiffness are further enhanced with the mechanic-friendly, oversized 15mm collet-style hardware and the Boost 110 and 148mm thru-axles.
