The race shoe that lets you keep on truckin'.
When 26 miles is just a training run for something longer, you need a shoe designed with the ultra-long-distance athlete in mind. Offering optimal long-distance cushioning and comfort, without the loss of proprioception, the Inov 8 Men's Race Ultra 290 Running Shoe fits the bill. A Two-Arrow 8mm drop offers optimal cushioning and comfort and lets you find the balance between support and natural running gait. A flatter outsole helps to ensure stability, even once fatigue sets in.

Pretty happy so far.
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: 12
I've speed-hiked and ran mountain trails for years, but mostly in light hiking boots/shoes or approach shoes. These are my first dedicated trail-running shoe. They are not as flexible as I would have hoped, but that may be an acceptable trade-off for the good rock-protection that the stiff sole provides. The lug size and depth is good for multiple types of surfaces, from dirt to scree to slickrock, though may not be the greatest in loose mud. There is a seam across the top of the heel inside that worried me the instant I put them on, but surprisingly, I haven't gotten a blister there yet, but have only run about 10 miles at a time in them so far. The weight is a little lighter than my light hikers, but still pretty heavy compared to my road running shoes. The 'Inov8' logo cracked and peeled on the first use, and is not of a proper material to flex with the shoe. I haven't crossed enough water yet to comment on the waterproofness, but breathability seemed adequate, though not as much as a non-waterproof shoe. All in all, I'm pretty happy with them, and hope they allow me to increase both my speed and distances in the mountains, while minimizing bruised feet from sharp rocky trails and scrambling. Fit seemed true to size.

I've used over 40 inov8 shoes, so when I say this shoe is poor, I actually mean it. Biggest complaint initially was that it's not blue, it's purple. I bought this shoe for the Bear 100 because I wanted something burlier than the Ultra 270 (which is fantastic), but it was not great. It doesn't have the cushioning that I would expect from the stack height and weight of the shoe. It felt board stiff, and didn't loosen up like I was expecting. The grip is adequate, but not nearly as sticky as other Inov8s i've used. Sad to say, but this is yet another poor product that Inov8 has let get into the market.
Trail grip without the weight
This shoe is comfortable and light. It doesn't have the huge lugs like most trail shoes making it a good road shoe as well, but still plenty of grip on the loosest trails. It has a smaller toe box which is nice for those steep trails when your toes need support on the way down.
