Transitioning from long afternoons spent on flowy singletrack under the trees to staring at a blank wall on the trainer all winter could break even the toughest mountain biker. Don't do it. If the trails are where you'd rather spend your time, add the 2016 Ibis Trans-Fat Complete Fat Bike to your stable, invest in a few warmer layers, and get back outside for the winter. The Trans-Fat's name gives more than a nod to guilty post-ride food binges, which you'll have wholeheartedly earned after pedaling through the snow, ice, and rain.
If the Trans-Fat's geometry feels a lot like one of Ibis' mountain bikes, that's because the brand based the carbon frame on its nimble but less appropriately named hardtail 29er, the Tranny. Barrel through the bumpy stuff with Trans-Fat's slack head tube and capable front end while the carbon fiber keeps the frame feeling quick. Though most fat bikes accommodate nearly five-inch tires, Ibis showed some restraint with the Trans-Fat, shaping the rear triangle to fit up to four-inch tires only. You won't sacrifice the ability to blast through mushy wet snow or sandy paths, and you'll gain some added maneuverability when the trails turn narrow and unpredictable.
Choose the simplicity of one-by or the granny gear versatility of a double drivetrain setup with the Trans-Fat; though it comes with a Shimano Deore one-by setup, the frame is compatible with both. A set of Deore XT hydraulic disc brakes is beyond reproach for its dependable, durable behavior, and Ibis gifts the Trans-Fat with a few other well-chosen components to ready it for immediate use. A Thomson stem, KS LEV dropper post, and sticky Lizard Skins grips all work together to make the Trans-Fat a seriously sweet stand-in for your line-gobbling enduro monster in the winter months.
