We're not the sharpest tools in the shed, but the benefits of wider rims are simple enough that even we can understand them: wider rims mean more rubber on the ground, which means more traction. Wider tires also deform less than narrower tires, generally speaking, so a wide rim basically lets you double down on awesomeness. The Ibis 741 Carbon Fiber 27.5in Wheelset sports a jacked-up 35mm internal width, which puts traditional rims to shame. Wider rims also let the tire sit in a more natural "U" shape, which means you can run lower air pressure, which further improves traction and reduces the risk of pinch flatting.

Adding to the benefits of shape is the 741's construction. Carbon fiber is obviously light and stiff, so it minimizes the effort needed to get and keep your wheels rolling, and won't deform when you hit obstacles.
