So I am trying to buy a snowboarding backpack for my boyfriend.
He snowboards a lot and needs a good backpack to store stuff.
He does have a bias towards aesthetics... so I can't decide between the Dakine Heli Pro DLX and the Dakine Heli Pro. The Pro has cooler patterns but the DLX has better quality features.... but Dakine overall is really good quality.... soooo.... any suggestions?
love it

pretty stoked when i bought it and just as stoked each time I use it, fits all my gear ranging from my GoPro, extra layers, my lunch, and for longer excursions, a shovel and a probe. It fits all that and I still have extra room. great for in bounds skiing as well as sidecountry and backcountry. ski carry works well too.
Super Nice!

This bag has it all. The shovel pocket is big enough to fit the shovel blade, probe and even my old trusty trekkers. The bag says its 20L, but i had the Kode 22 and this bag has much more room for extra layers, food etc. I still have yet to find a better bag for backcountry tours or resort sidecountry. The pocket on the hip belt is really handy for things you want to access easily on the hike and the ski carry works perfect!
perfect bag

This bag does it all - School - Work and Backcountry hiking! The only thing missing is a good Computer Sleeve, but it is made for the Backcountry and you normally will not bring your computer to the "cuntch" - It does have enough space to put a computer in - my Apple 15inch fits fine....

I had been using a Dakine Helipro for 5 years and it never seemed to fall apart. The only reason I'm not using it anymore is because I got a new one! These backpacks are built to last and the style is just a +. Dakine is a roots brand and has stuck with the roots. The backpacks show how the company stays true. The outerwear is the same way. would this backpack carry items for highschool? (books, notebooks, possibly a laptop)

Absolutely, I used this pack in school for years! Doesn't have a laptop sleeve though, so you may want to get one of those.

Yes you can and the water pouch kinda doubles as a sleeve for your laptop although it's not padded. However I assume you want a really good backcountry back pack as well as for school If its mostly for school I would get a cheaper bag! The Heli Pro (not DLX) is really good for both without having to pay a lot extra for insulated straps and such!

Water Resistant and Hydration Compatable

My Brother was looking for a pack that was water resistant and hydration compatible to carry books and other things around the city when it's raining or snowing. I recommended this pack because of those features and he can use it for snowboarding too! Now he doesn't have to worry about his books getting wet from a water absorbing backpack!
Heli Pro DLX or Pro II?

I was trying to decide between this and the Pro II Backpack. The tag on the Pro II showed that it has the vertical snowboard carry. The tag lies. The Heli Pro DLX has the vertical carry.
The Pro II has a back entry area that to get into the main compartment. The top zipper doesn't open very wide and is quite annoying. It is even more annoying if you have a hydration bladder in there because the hose will be in the way. The other pocket is nice though because it has a holder for your shovel handle and your probe to keep them organized and the shovel blade fits in there too!
I like the Heli Pro DLX better because it has the vertical snowboard carry option if you don't want to carry your board vertically, the top zipper opens as far as a normal backpack does, and has a deployable drink holder on the side. It isn't as organized withe shovel and probe as the Pro II, but the other features make it ok.

Not sure I'm following you here - don't both the Pro II and the Heli Pro DLX have vertical and horizontal carry? They have the same mounting system...?
Jeff Guest
Member since
No. That is what I thought too when I bought the Pro II, and the hang tag on the Pro II is also misleading because it shows that the Pro II can carry horizontally, but it can only carry vertically.

This backpack is practically all I want for one backcountry day. I bought the charcoal color scheme, and it´s not the same than the picture that appears in your web.... the sleeves do not have the citron color borders.... well it´s not big deal... but still... I was a little bit disapointed with this thing.

I got the Eric Pollard edition of this pack and I love it. Its super comfortable, and has the perfect pockets for everything you need. I use it for backcountry skiing, and it fits my gear perfectly, and has a very sturdy ski carry for when you I want to boot a peak. all in all a great looking pack with great features.
Not as described.

Before the price went down, BC.com had a few photos up showing all the different pockets and angles of this pack. The "tools" compartment showed 3-4 separate pockets to hold shovel and handle, probe etc. When I received the order I saw that there is only one pocket inside that compartment. For an extra $30 I found an Osprey Kode series that has absolutely everything! For the current price, this Dakine is a good buy. The material, construction and fit are all really nice! Just not what I was looking for.

The backpack is pretty much perfect for my skiing and other outdoor needs. It has room to fit a back country snow shovel with the whole main pocket to spare. Great for powder days, long hikes and I've even started using it for school and it works great. The ski carry feature is especially impressive. It's designed to let you adjust the wires and straps to fit just about any size of skis. I don't give it five stars because I wish It had places to stash all the extra straps when I don't have the waist and chest strap hooked in. When I use it for school the straps just hang everywhere, but seriously that isn't a big deal at all.
Great Snowboard Bag

I bought the blue one. It looks even better in person. Light, durable, an more than enough room for anything you could take on the mountain. The Camelbak compatibility is great (although it doesn't come with a Camelbak). I also, recommend buying the thermal hose so your water doesn't freeze.
Haven't had a chance to use the horizontal or vert. board carry, but it's nice to know it's there. The only thing I would add are more internal pockets to help organize the vast interior space. The fleece goggle pocket is key.
Would recommend to any skier boarder regardless of ability.

I really like this bag. I'm 6'-3" 205 lbs and it fits me really well. Normally the waist straps on smaller, day pack, sized bags ride too high. On this bag, the waist straps ride right on my hips where they should. This makes the bag great for hiking, which is all that I have been able to use the bag for so far. When the snow comes I'll be trying it on the slopes. The ice axe loops are great for holding a hatchet or hammer and have given me easy access to these tools while bush wacking. The pockets are simple without any dividers or accessory slots. I can take what I need on a day hike easily in this bag and it's not too big and bulky. I like that the pack rides close to my back and even when full doesn't expand out too far from my back. I can see this being nice for balance while skiing. The materials in this bag are very durable and it looks like it will take a beating for many years. The only thing about the bag that I don't like is that the two buckles on the back side of the bag (horizontal snow board carry) dig into my shoulder blades when I'm wearing the pack with just a T-shirt. As soon as I put a sweat shirt or jacket on, they are no longer a problem. Being that the bag is intended for skiing or snow boarding I'm guessing they assumed you'd be wearing a jacket and left the buckles as they are.
