The Omni-Shield treatment on the fabric resists stains and rain; it's just too bad you can't coat your son with Omni-Shield. Warm Farehnot insulation helps him stay warmer, so he stays outside longer, and as such, the quiet inside lasts longer. A taffeta lining slides easily over baselayers when getting for a day on the hill or the busstop.
An attached hood protects his head from wind and a slight drizzle, but only if the hood covers his head. Zippered hand pockets give you a safe place to stow his gloves, emergency money, or a house key. Adjustable cuff tabs let you seal out snow and wind, if he still lets you help.
