When you're ready to leave the resort behind and head far into the backcountry, the Burton AK 31L Backpack has the features you need to survive and prosper. Whether you're venturing by splitboard or snowmobile, get everything you need for the day to your secret zone with this burly bag.

Vertical snowboard straps hold your board when you're bootpacking the last stretch to the peak, and they also serve as a compression system to keep your pack as low-profile as possible. It also has a horizontal board carry option for riders traveling by sled. An easy-access shovel and probe pocket lets you get to your avalanche rescue gear as quickly as possible in case of a slide. The external pole storage holds your trekking poles when you're shredding down, and a padded waist belt keeps the pack from flopping around and throwing you off balance. It's also hydration-compatible so you can keep precious fluids handy, and a fleece-lined pocket keeps your goggles from getting scratched when you're hiking up in sunglasses.

    His Favorite Pack Ever

Finding a perfect pack for my man this season was no easy task and we looked at quite a few. This was to replace a fairly old Dakine Heli Pro 28 L
At 31 Liters the pack is a great size for day trips and long tours. Ergonomic fit is awesome. The back pad doubles as a horizontal board carry. Good side access zippers. One side access panel for water or small gear is nice to have separated. Top access is great with a cinch closure that extends the capacity or stuffs in. The inside Kangaroo pouch is perfect for extra gear(Verts in this case) Everything fits internally including: Poles, Verts, extra layers, gloves etc. Ripstop is bomber. It has nice outside gear carry as well which is perfect for an ice axe, snowboards etc. Simple, low profile design is perfect for anyone wanting to get out into the backcountry.

      CONSTRUCTION
The Nylon Ripstop is tough! This bag looks a little ridged, but she breaks in nice! The structure is greatly appreciated when its loaded to the brim, but does relax slightly with time for a comfortable fit. The main compartment can be accessed from the top and you’ll quickly notice that the interior is divided into two sections. The first section is near the front of bag and is designed specially for avalanche gear (shovel, probe and transceiver). You can also access this compartment from the side zip for quick access to your avy gear no matter how you have your pack loaded. The second compartment with in the main section is accessed via draw string so that your avy gear doesn’t get your layers and lunch wet! Or in case of an emergency you can grab the necessities with out digging through everything in your pack. There is also an area for a water bladder here. The separate compartments with in the main pocket is pure genius – great construction and well though out for dry gear and ease in an emergency. The zippers are waterproof and strong. There is a side pocket for quick stuff – I like to keep my map, cell phone and snacks in here for easy access. There is also a goggle lined pocket to keep things safe. The bag looks pretty simple from the outside, it’s not flashy, but it is very productive – just what you want. It’s also amazingly lightweight! Lots of options for loading your board, splitboard, poles, ice axe and whatever tools you might dream of bringing on a mountain inspired adventure with the straps and clips on the outside of the bag.

      USE
Gear testing isn’t a one-and-done deal. I’ve brought this bag splitboarding off piste, hiking, over night camping and on BIG splitboarding missions. It shines on day trips. Whether it’s a sled trip or heading off piste for some turns this bag is the one to pull from the quiver. One thing I did notice is that when your splitboard is A-frame it doesn’t allow easy access into the side or top compartments, carrying your board solid is much easier. The bag it’s self can hold quiet a bit and has adjustable straps to get a custom fit for the most comfort. I wouldn’t bring this one on BIG splitboard trips because it simply isn’t built to carry ALL your mountaineering gear or overnight gear at once. It will blow away your buddies packs on any day trips or specialized missions that don’ involve the entire gear closet. Most recently stoked when using the 31L for an avalanche course. Kept my lunch happy, my gear accessible, my layers dry and my back happy – not sure what else I could want!

      OVERALL
A definite “must” for your pack quiver. This bag will get used more than any other and you won’t be disappointed when you bring it out time after time. Did I mention it wears well?! Mine still looks brand new after putting it through the wringer!

      Wrong Color

Great bag. The carrying straps for board, split skis, and poles are money. Super reinforced, strong, and easy to tighten. I started using it right away because my other backcountry bag was busted... But I was shipped the wrong color. I ordered the black one, and I got an Army Green one. It seems like this was an error on Backcountry's side, as I don't think Burton would call a bag black and make it green.

If you spend sometime in the backcountry and have been looking for the perfect bag, this is it. Burton kind of thought of everything in making this. Your shovel hadle and probe have their own slips that they fit neatly in. the main compartment is split in two by a draw string divider, ensuring to keep your extra gloves, down jacket, layers, lunch, or whatever, dry as you take things in and out of your pack. the zippers are sealed. there's like 18 different ways to carry your board on this thing, including strapping it to the sides if you splitboard. This has improved my experience in the backcountry 150%. I finally have enough room for a solid day roaming around. Thank god for AK

Can this pack easily carry a splitboard that is still split, or does it work better if the board is put back together?

        Tobin,

This pack has the ability to carry a board vertically or horizontally but you'd be hard pressed to carry the board split. I'm sure you could rig it up, but it wouldn't be as nice to carry as a pack that has the ability to carry like the "A" frame style.
