Perfect casual winter jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 5' 10"
    Weight: 150 lbs
    Size Purchased: Medium

This is the first jacket i've bought from Black Diamond and will forever buy jackets from them. It is light and very warm. I mostly use it walking around campus. The past couple days the wind chill has been below zero but this jacket held strong. I purchased the slate and is a true grey. It fits perfectly and I'd highly recommend this jacket to anybody.

Light and hot

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I recently purchased this jacket and have not been disappointed. It is very warm. I got it to wear under a shell instead of my Burton down 500 fill jacket. So far this is way lighter and warmer. T-shirt is all I need under it from 15-30F.
The slate looks more brown than grey.

What is the center back length of a medium?

Unanswered Question

Do you suggest the black diamond access hybrid hoody or the belay stance hoody for someone who boulders and needs a warm jacket to climb and spot in?

This looks to be the parka, not the jacket. Thanks for posting though. It is nice to see it on a real person.

The center back length for size medium is 28 inches. Add/subtract one inch per size

Good not Great

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

First off, its a great insulating jacket for the price. Kept me warm many times climbing in the desert and many times alpine climbing/belay. Has a lot of decently sized pockets.

The only problem I encountered was the material. The outside does stand up to small scratches, but I got one ember near a campfire and it burned a good hole in the jacket. Furthermore, the outside pocket zipper catch and tear the material that line the inner pocket if you are not careful. Hand pockets get covered when wearing with a harness.

Bottom line: If you're strapped for cash, its a decent down jacket with its flaws, but if you can spend a little more, look elsewhere.

Responded on

Just as a heads up to all others; this jacket contains no down fibers. It's 100% synthetic.

Also, any jacket that has nylon as a fabric will burn near fires. If you're in the marked for fire-retardant materials, then wool is the way to go.

Yeah really. All of the amazing rips top fabrics in the world will melt like a piece of cellophane from embers. Choose your fire apparel wisely and that's no problem.
