Why We Like The Big Agnes Gold Camp UL 5 Tarp

With its pyramid design and adjustable center pole, the Big Agnes Gold Camp UL 5 Tarp is a reliable, lightweight, and versatile shelter for up to 5 people and pets. We like it for traveling fast and light when we don't have to worry too much about bugs or the weather. The shelter can be supported with the adjustable center pole or hung by the exterior peak loop. Adjustable stake-out loops make setup simple while the reflective guy-outs add stability and visibility. With a trail weight just under 3 pounds for 5 people, it's a minimalist option that pitches fast and travels light.

Great 4-5 person pyramid tent

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Height:
6' 2"
Weight:
260

Relatively light weight, small pack down size, easy to set up, good condensation control, protects great against wind and rain. What isn’t to love. I haven’t used it in snow yet, but will plan on doing so this winter with family which was my main reason for this purchase. Will see how well it sheds snow. The only issue with the tent is the center pole it comes with bows if the tent it cinched down too tight. The pool is adjustable, so this should not normally be a problem. Just something to pay attention to. It has not permanently deformed and goes right back to its original form. Love the fact that it has two openings to make it easier for people to get in and get out without climbing over one another. Ventilation is OK especially if you adjust the height of the center pool to allow more ventilation from underneath the tent. Tent has more privacy than a DCF tent. Peak ventilation at the top of the tent has a mechanism to keep them open, even with wind. There is also a Velcro closure in case of high winds with rain to keep the driving rain from coming in which is a nice feature that even the more expensive DCF pyramid tents don’t always offer. Overall almost perfect. Packs down very small for a 4 to 5 person tent. Would recommend 4 adults maximum with gear. Would fit five OK if about half of them were children. If one was looking to save weight you could exchange out the center pole for a carbon fiber pole or use 2 trekking poles, but then might lose the adjustability feature. I have the means to buy the more expensive DCF 4 person pyramid tents but they lacked some important features that this tent has. Adjustability, 2 openings, peak vents keep open or stay closed and to me these are more important than any sag that this silpoly tent has. I had this tent in pouring rain for 24 hours straight and noticed very minimal sag. For what it is and the price definitely worth getting. Glad I found. I had been on the fence for 3 months about various other brands. Overall, this is the best fit for me.
