The 4-way stretch, highly-breathable Backcountry.com Women’s Shift Softshell Jacket reads your mind, knows your deepest desires, and fulfills your dreams in the form of a helmet-friendly, weather-shunning hood. At Backcountry.com, we're not about to slap our logo on a glorified piece of polyester and call it a softshell. We wanted a jacket that could see us through countless ski tours, alpine climbs, and hikes into the highlands. The Shift's wind-resistant Polartec Power Shield softshell fabric fends off light moisture and breathes like a champ to keep you cool when the day warms up. A performance cut ensures a streamlined silhouette that minimizes bulk and maximizes mobility. Internal pockets keep tabs on your iPod, phone, and wallet; fleece-lined pockets warm your digits; and a laminated wrist pocket takes care of your small stuff. When comparable jackets go for close to $300, it would be crazy to let this deal slip away.

Bottom Line: Shift into the next gear of outerwear versatility with the Shift Hooded Softshell Jacket.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

Love, love, love it!

It just arrived today so it hasn't seen the elements yet. It's lightweight but solid, soft, and very flattering. I can't wait to get it out on the trail to test it out. It seems like a great value for the price.

One year into it and I'm still in love.

By:
April 15, 2011

I bought this jacket during late May, and for the past year I have worn it several times a week. I am 5'3'' and 110 pounds- the extra small fits me perfectly. I appreciate the pocket on the left sleeve- I can throw my license+credits cards in it when I want to go to the store.

As read from a review below, "One other thing i like about it is the cinch cords at the bottom that you can tighten through the two front pockets to keep wind from blowing up." Hope this helps!

Great jacket

By:
February 27, 2009

This jacket is great for nordic skiing, and I am looking forward to using it while skinning up for backcountry skiing. I wear a small in most things I buy (I'm 5'5" and about 120 lbs), but I got a medium in this jacket because the sleeves and length were a bit short on the small. The medium fits great, and I definitely recommend this jacket.

Pretty much amazing

By:

I love this jacket. I've used it for hiking, snowshoeing, skiing and just around town, all of which it worked great. I'm 5'9 and about 150 lbs., so I got a large. The arms are long enough, the torso length is perfect and it's roomy enough for (thin) layering underneath. I wore an Underarmor baselayer with a Pearl Izumi Woolie Mammoth under the Shift; it was about 15 degrees and windy outside and I was almost sweating. I haven't tried bike commuting with it yet, I doubt I will, as someone said on here it's not made for that.

I have yet to find any drawback to this jacket.

good but misrepresented

By:
December 19, 2008

The fabric is a lighter gray shown in the picture- a tad darker than the picture of the "steam" hoodless shift softshell. The blue (the background of the current backcountry.com header) zippers add really pretty contrast. By helmet compatible, they must mean people with helmet-HAIR or fits under a helmet, I can't imagine fitting even a super-low volume helmet under the hood. Seems very well constructed though, backcountry.com stuff runs slightly on the small/slim side (what, backcountry enthusiasts are thinner than the average American? No way...)

sleeves way too short

By:
January 27, 2010

I'm a reasonably well proportioned 5'11" person and the XL was pretty much the way I wanted it to fit - except for the sleeves, which were a solid 1" too short. Disappointment! It's speeding it's way back to backcountry.com right now and I'm back on the hunt for a new jacket.

other than that, though, the jacket looked fabulous, and was especially a good deal for the price. the hood was a good shape and the zippers looked like they were real quality.

I agree it is an awesome jacket except for the length of the sleeves, like said 1'' too short.

Write your question here...Hi - I love the jacket but see that the Medium is no longer available. I typically wear medium - I'm 5'8", and 130 lbs. Would a small be too small, and a large too large, and which - judging on the fit- would be best to go for?

if medium is your fit, the best option would be the stoic welder for womens... this style is not welded instead of sewn, and available in medium.

Only soft shell you'll ever need!

By:
August 11, 2009

Got a sweet deal on S&C and love it. I'm 5.7 and 120 lb and it fits perfectly. This is slightly fitted so if you are planning on layering w/ a fleece then get a size bigger. I layer it with icebreaker and it was warm enough in 40` weather. If you climb and want something that will move with you then this is it. I returned my North Face Bionic shell for this one because this was just more breathable and fits better. Happy shopping :D

Good piece of gear.

By:
December 4, 2010

This jacket has a great fit, the soft shell is legitimately soft while breathing and shedding water well. There's a comfortable microfleece liner that makes it comfortable next to the skin to throw on for running errands. There is enough room in the cut and give in the material to be able to layer effectively. It packs down small too, making it easy to throw in for trips. Mine has been around the U.S., Japan, and Korea with me.

no pit zips needed due to the great performance of the materials. it breathes well, you can actually feel Air pass through it, helping the material to remove moisture.

too short

By:
March 10, 2009

I'm 5'6.6" and 120 and got the medium. It fits nicely throughout and the sleeves are plenty long, BUT its TOO SHORT. A good inch or two shorter than the men's version. I suppose this is good for style, but not functionality. I commute on bike through the winter and don't want a cold mid-drift. I will be returning and trying the men's version.

great

By:
January 4, 2009

I agree, I expected this jacket to be darker. Apart from that though, I love it. I wear it all the time; its comfy and lightweight enough that you can forget you have it on. But it can also keep you warm when it gets pretty chilly. I have worn it when it's in the forties and been alright, though I would suggest something warmer for that temperature. But really, it's great. I highly recommend it, and am actually wearing mine right now. happy trials!

height and weight is not a good measure, check our chest, waist, hip measures and check the size chart. this style is more fitted than north face, and REI, but may be the same size, just fit better!

Good Softshell

By:
April 11, 2010

got this off of s&c for a crazy deal and was very excited about it. it is very well made and the combination of colors go great together. the jacket does a good job blocking wind and keeping me toasty. My only qualms about it are the fact that that although the width in the arms and in the torso are true to size, the arm length is slightly short and the torso length is even shorter. Have to wear a long shirt with this unless i want my midriff exposed. I am about 5'6, 120 lbs and got a small. Would have considered getting a medium but i didn't think the torso length would be much longer since it is just the cut of the jacket. One other thing i like about it is the cinch cords at the bottom that you can tighten through the two front pockets to keep wind from blowing up.

By:

I love this jacket so much that I babysit it in public places. I bought it during the BC sale too-I bought it to wear primarily for X-country skiing. It has quickly become my favorite coat. I live in WI and I will be able to use for all the seasons. I wore it near the campfire last weekend and an ember from the fire made a tiny hole. :( It is warm, water resistant and fits great! I am 5' 5' and weigh 140. I love the goat!

Love this jacket!

By:
March 15, 2010

I picked it up on SAC in the fall just after I found out I was pregnant. I knew I would need a larger softshell to remain active this winter and it has worked perfectly! It has been great for x-country skiing and just wearing around town on warmer days. I bought a large and at 6 months pregnant still have enough room to grow and yet I know I will be able to wear it still after the baby is born with more layers underneath. I don't feel frumpy trying to wear my husband's coat and the price was well worth it. Love the color contrast and the high quality material.

Surprisingly great jacket

By:
January 7, 2010

I got this jacket refurbished on GearTrade because I was venturing off to my first ski trip and I wanted something high quality that wasn't going to cost me a lot. I was worried at first because I really thought I would freeze to death, but I layered with a cheap baselayer and a Haglofs fleece and I was more than comfortable. You can move really easily in this jacket and it's extremely lightweight. It is a little bit short compared to most ski/snowboard jackets I've seen, but my ski pants have a pretty high waist so it wasn't an issue. I'm 5'5", 130 lbs and I have wide shoulders and a larger chest and the Medium perfectly fine.

Not great

By:
December 4, 2009

I bought this for my wife, because she loves the Men's Shift that I own. Overall, I'm disappointed. Fit is very small (I know, others have said the same thing). The fabric is relatively thin/lightweight relative to the Men's Shift Softshell from last year. If you want a VERY lightweight softshell with a hood, then this is the one. If you want something with a bit more heft, look elsewhere.

Nice, light shell

By:
October 12, 2009

I got this about two days before heading to northern WI to help pull four docks and a few boats out of the water. The weather turned out to be unseasonably cold and very windy. This shell did the trick! I put an insulating fleece underneath, as it likely wouldn't have been warm enough on its own, but it blocked the wind like a champ (I'm 5'4'', 150 and a large leaves just enough room to layer without being too big). I have another backcountry shell - an older shift with no hood - this one is a smoother, lighter, and more flexible fabric (which keeps the hood from sticking up and being annoying). Great jacket for the fall so far, can't wait to take it skiing!

Love at first sight

By:
November 13, 2009

My boyfriend bought me this jacket a few days ago since I've been complaining about not having a soft shell and let me just say I LOVE this jacket. You don't even feel like you are wearing a jacket! The material is amazing, soft, and incredibly warm for how thin it is. It was about 20 degrees this morning and this jacket kept me toasty! It does run on the small side - I'm about 5'3 and 125 and needed to swap out the small for a medium like everyone else, but now that I have a size that fits I don't want to take off. If you need a softshell, this is the one you want!

Nice Jacket short sleeves

By: Backcountry.com Employee
November 24, 2010

I got this jacket and I love the fabric and the design, also love the color, it is an awesome gray, the only problem is that the sleeves are a bit short, I bought size small which according with the sizing chart the sleeves should be around 80 cm however they are like 70 cm and something, that is my only complain.

I am in love with this jacket! I'm 5'4" and 125, athletic build, with a somewhat shorter torso. The fit is perfect, and looks like it was made for me. It has a very flattering feminine fit and the colors are great. I especially love the blue zip
