Why We Built The Backcountry Carbon Splitboarding Poles

To keep things light on the skintrack, we kit up with our Backcountry Carbon Splitboarding Poles. The complete carbon construction saves grams for an ultralight feel in hand, while the collapsible design lets us stash this pair in our pack when it's time to harvest fresh powder turns. Plus, the redesigned basket still flexes to adapt to changing angles, but it now has a stronger connection to the pole to keep it from popping out when the skintrack starts to get real steep.

Light and unreliable

The push buttons don’t lock consistently. The problem predominantly occurs in snow/cold. Very frustrating. I used these for 3 seasons pretty heavily and would just hold them on the ride down to avoid the issue , which defeats the benefit of collapsing poles. I snapped one in half on a recent trip on the ride out on some flat terrain. I formed some opinions, lever locks and aluminum from here on out.

Worthless and frustrating

Ugh. I've never hated a piece of equipment more than these poles. The push button locks refuse to work as soon as these poles see any bit of snow on them, resulting in poles that disconnect constantly. And then it's impossible to pull them apart when you actually need to. I've used 4 different poles and they all have the same exact issues. Completely worthless design and guaranteed to frustrate you all day long.

all good except the fold

Weight:

I've only got a couple of tours with these, but here is my take. All quite good except the fold. Grips good, adjustment good, weight good for the price, deployment good, handle good for risers. I'm happy with them, but the trifold isn't very useful with the baskets on. They fold up super tight if you remove the baskets, but I'm not going to be removing/reinstalling baskets in the field. I sort of wish I had gotten the ski-specific poles, as they are a little lighter/cheaper and I'm strapping on the outside of the pack anyway. I suppose if you're traveling with these, they'd be great for packing, but I'd recommend the ski poles over these even for splitboarders.

Like everything about these poles...

...lightweight carbon, foldable, adjustable length, long grips, powder baskets, BUT, they're not durable. I used them at most 5x since I got them in March, and yes, one broke, when I tapped it against my boot yesterday. I never stepped on them, or scraped them. Seems random. Very disappointing for a product with great specs. Even though they are light, the swing weight seems high, maybe that puts extra stress on the bottom of the pole? My single pole will now go in my avy pack as a spare to be used only in case of emergency.

Trusty poles

Ive used these for almost 250 days these past 2 winters, they are great poles. Cant go wrong, lightweight and easy to fold. Id say the only downside is the basket size is a tad bit too small, but thats for days where it snows at least 2 feet overnight. Beyond that they're great and haven't had any issues with them
