Backcountry allied down parka

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Customer service was good people but....this coat lists normally for 349.00$ but I'm saying if you are looking for a warm winter jacket look elsewhere unless your winter days are above 50degrees..nice looking coat but not worth 75.00$ as an early fall late summer jacket!.this was my 1st and LAST purchase of backcountry gear.

Good Jacket

Definitely go with a size smaller than you typically choose. I am 5'10" and 190# with 37" chest and Medium fits more than good. I can even layer up and still have room. I agree with another post, I wish the front pockets had more insulation than just the shell material but they do the job! I wish it was just more waterproof, not really rain jacket ability so wet snow makes it slightly soggy but good enough for most Colorado snow storms.

Nice Idea

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

Very nice ideas in this jacket/parka: wrist gaiters, over sized adjustable hood, windflap with snaps (not velcro), two way main zipper, recycled fabric, and 700 fill 90% down. The down side is that it weighs a lot and is difficult to compress for packing/traveling, plus the hand warmer, side entry pockets do not go into the down fill, they only go under the shell, not really "hand warmers". . The end of the season price is amazingly great!

Nice Jacket, One Issue

Purchased this jacket because the price was good and I needed a jacket that was bigger than I’d typically wear so I could toss it over anything before walking the dog on cold mornings. It is warm, and there is a lot to like (great hood, comfortable). The front pockets are poorly designed. You would have to have very small hands to use them while out for a walk. As the other reviewer said they aren’t ergonomically designed either (no slant on top of too small), and aren’t insulated. Even in cold weather I would be fine without insulation but it just isn’t sized appropriately.. I’d add the zippers are really small so even keeping gloves jammed in there to wear because the pockets don’t work.

Writing this review because I wish someone had when I was looking to buy. I'm using this jacket for casual/low intensity use (standing around at the dog park or going to the store). in Eastern WA in temps down to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Pros: -Fits great. I'm 6'1" and leaner than the models shown, and the medium fits great. There is plenty of room in the arms and the body feels great too. -The hood is very voluminous - which is nice because it doesn't pull up on the shoulders like some other jackets, I'm guessing they left room for a helmet or a really thick hat. -The jacket also has a ton of loft and feels pretty warm. -Obviously the price of this jacket is pretty tough to beat (much less on Steep & Cheap). -Looks nice. No big brand labels, patches, or stitches give it an understated look. Cons: -The black color is not a true/deep black. It's more of a really really deep navy blue to my eye. -The fabric is pretty thin, which could be a plus, but something more durable or wind/water resistant would have been nice to have. -I could do without the hand gaiters. They work as intended but not my thing. -The zipper is hidden behind buttons (could be a plus for you), but I like the east of velcro. -The outside hand pockets are not insulted, the pockets are just nylon, and they're not at an ergonomic angle like on OR jackets. -The breast pocket is inside the jacket so you have to unzip to grab your wallet. For what it's worth I also purchased a North Face McMurdo, which has a superior outer material but the medium is a bit short and the large is too big for a down coat to warm properly. I'll probably be keeping this Backcountry jacket over the North Face alternative but I'm skeptical if it will stand the test of time.
