Why We Like The Skyward II Pant

When it's our turn to set the skinner and we can feel our body temperature spiking, we’re stoked to have the Skyward II Pant thanks to its breathable, waterproof design. The AscentShell 3L membrane keeps moisture from fresh powder out, while allowing moisture from inside of the pants to easily escape. The 420D scuff guards and wind-resistant fabric make these bomber pants an excellent choice for hot laps at the resort as well.

Not waterproof in the slightest

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

These would be the best snowpants I owned if they just TRIED to be semi-waterproof. This is the start of my second season in these pants (because they were not cheap) and I might have to give in and buy a new pair. First day of the season it was snowing and I was drenched from riding the chairlift and skiing -- my backside was drenched through my thermals and the front area on the quads was soaked straight through. Then even the next day, not snowing, the butt was wet from sitting on the chairlift - it was cold, I assume the warmth of my body warming up the lift's chair pad was enough condensation. I wanted to love these. The stretch is unreal, I love the cut. I have plenty of room over my boots, borderline flair pants so not sure I agree with others on that. Love the power strap slots on the snow gaiter, absolutely genius. But come on OR, for a PNW company I thought these would deliver way more on waterproofing. Use areas: East coast skiing from early to late season. Powder and groomers. A few tours out west (ski and bootpack).

I’ve used these pants on a couple tours over the last couple weeks. Overall first impression is they are super comfy and the thigh pockets have a good amount of space. The hip pockets, however, are not very spacious. They mentioned a transceiver pocket which I think both thigh pockets would suffice, but there isn’t a way to attach the device to prevent losing it. Already has a hole in the right thigh, potentially from a branch, had hoped they were more durable. Overall I’ve liked these, just wish they were a tad more keen on the details and durability.

Zippers get stuck on inner fabric

Like on older sleeping bags, when zippers could catch on nearby fabric and get totally jammed unable to move up or down, same thing happens on the upper pocket zippers on these pants. I see other reviews have noted similar, also verified with a friend who is sending his back for this same problem. Could be an issue with a particular production run, it has to do with the alignment of the fabric used for reinforcement of the zipper that is so wide that it pushes the pocket material toward the zipper track. Never have 2 hands free to get zipper unstuck when in the wild which is frustrating when you don't want to move items to other pockets. I have tried re-creasing the zipper reinforcement fabric to no avail, for now just using the lower pockets which don't seem to have the same issue. Should not happen on a premium OR product that supposedly was field tested. Certainly hope it's covered under warranty, am going to give it a few more trips to see if as the fabric softens the problem resolves.

Comfortable But Has Durability Issues

Thought they were amazing until they started to fall apart. One of the thigh pockets (the one I use) failed as well as the crotch which developed a hole pretty quickly. Love the fit, flexibility, breathability, and [reasonable] water resistance, but expect that a pair of technical pants with this price tag should hold up a little better.

Great pants, zipper issues

Overall, these are great pants. I tried the various pants of this style at the backcountry store and landed on this one, which is between the super flexible pant and bombproof inflexible version. I?ve used them for skiing, backcountry/skinning, and ice climbing. They?re great for each of those applications in terms of flexibility and protection. Pockets and vents well placed. A problem is the zippers catch often. Especially the standard pant pockets. I swapped out one, and experience the same on the replacement. It?s a pain when wearing gloves and you need something.
