ZEAL Optics Ellume Challenge

ZEAL set out to put our ellume lenses to the test in our backyard of Boulder, CO. A quick stop on Pearl Street Mall and Chautauqua Park proved to be the perfect sun-drenched testing grounds to demonstrate the color-enhancing clarity and craftsmanship in our plant-based, polarized lenses. Don't take our word for it; see for yourself.

A little too biodegradable

I've used it several times

I really wanted to love these sunglasses when I found them at a local gear shop (did not buy from Backcountry, but want this community to be aware of the issues with this product). Looking at them, they are a great riff on a basic shape and I loved the matte finish, polarized lenses and minimalist design. They look and feel great on, and they're biodegradable?? How cool is that? Unfortunately, I am about to send my pair back for their second repair. The first break was less than 2 weeks from purchase and the arm snapped right off behind the hinge when I was putting them on. This week I noticed the frame cracked on the nose side of the lens and when it snaps, the lens will pop out. I have been very gentle with them and they have been in a case or on my face the whole 2 months I've owned them. I have to give Zeal credit for having a great repair policy and waiving the fee for me the first time, but I wouldn't recommend these frames to you unless you get 2 pairs--one to use until they break and then another one to wear while you wait the 2 weeks it takes to have them repaired. Sorry Zeal, but I think this material needs some more testing before you charge $170 for it!!

Environment Friendly Shades!

I've put it through the wringer
True to size

I've been a loyal Smith fan for the majority of my life, but I may have just made the switch to Zeal. First, these glasses are made from 100% plant-based material and are bio-degradable. Being an environmentally conscious company and consumer is important, but unfortunately it often comes with a higher cost, and in this case it does. Trust me, IT IS WORTH IT! They are made in Italy and polarized. I have a shorter face and wear a medium google and the shape of this glass is flattering. The lens is larger and provides good coverage, which I prefer. Originally I got these shades for casual use, but I actually wear them mountain biking quite a bit since they provide so much coverage. The are light, fit nice under a helmet, and are secure when biking. My only hesitation with these shades is that they are fragile. The soft frames make me hesitant that I might squish them someday. They also come with a soft case that with a magnetic open/close and a cloth for cleaning. Treat yourself, invest in a nice pair of sunnies that you can wear casually and shredding knowing you're doing good for the environment!

great sunglass!!

I've used it several times
True to size

I was looking for a bigger sunglass that I could wear around town and driving and the Dakota fit just that. The Dakota is a more fashionable piece (a very big sunlgass) than an active piece. I love it though . It has great coverage from the sun with 100% UVA, UVB and UVC protection as well as being polarized. Not only do they protect from the sun but they are also 100% biodegradable!! The sunglasses are made from US organic grown cotton! I thought that was the coolest thing ever!

Hey Katie, would you say you have a small, medium or large sized face? I have a small face and really struggle to find suitable frames... Any info on sizing would be awesome!
