The heart of this bike is Yeti's Switch Infinity suspension, which is among the best we've ridden. It's plush throughout the 140mm of rear travel, offering a smooth ride quality that makes it feel like you've got more travel than the numbers dictate. It maintains impressive traction across chattery small bumps and square-edged hits alike, with enough ramp to confidently soak up sizeable drops. Paired with a 160mm Fox fork up front, the SB5.5 is unstoppable when gravity takes over and the trail points down.
Climbing abilities are equally as important, and Switch Infinity doesn't disappoint. The beauty of this design is the translating main pivot, aka the Switch Infinity link. The link moves upward in the beginning of its travel, creating ideal anti-squat characteristics for efficient pedaling that minimizes energy lost to the suspension. We found ourselves leaving the shock in open mode for most climbs, except for sustained grunts on buff fire roads. As the suspension moves deeper into its travel, the link switches direction and moves back downward, providing buttery smooth suspension action for successive bumps and harder hits.
The SB5.5's balanced geometry is another element of the bike's success. The 66.5-degree head angle paired with a 51mm offset fork is stable on descents and high speeds, without making the bike feel sluggish on tamer trails and climbs. The reach and wheelbase are generous, but not overly long, providing a good balance between stability and maneuverability. The 17.2in chainstays are short but not too short, which is what Yeti wanted, helping the rear wheel stay tracked through rugged terrain. A low-slung top tube and fairly short standover help you lower your center of gravity for more control on descents and while cornering.
This model uses Yeti's TURQ-series carbon fiber, consisting of the highest quality materials Yeti can get their hands on, delivering a fine balance of strength, low weight, stiffness, and compliance. This makes for a ride that's fully composed over rough terrain, and surefooted when you're stepping on the gas and railing high-speed corners. By using high modulus carbon fiber, Yeti is able to shed roughly 400 grams compared to the Carbon-series frames while maintaining the same levels of durability.
The component spec on this bike doesn't leave much to be desired. Top-tier Fox Factory suspension with low-friction Kashima coating yields a plush ride, with a good range of adjustments to dial it in for your individual weight, riding style, and the terrain at hand so you can charge the hardest lines with confidence. You'll need some solid brakes to control all that momentum and the DH-worthy Code RSC's do the job nicely with plenty of outright power as well as modulation that lets you fine tune your speed without immediately breaking traction. Acceleration duties are handled by a SRAM XO1 drivetrain that offers precise, reliable shifting and a wide gear range, with a 50t bailout gear that helps you get up steeper climbs that might normally require dismount.

After issues with the Mercury rims, I upgraded the rims to I9 Hydra's and couldn't be happier. It makes riding fun, so I find myself always thinking of the next ride.

This bike will inspire more confidence to chose the harder line, take that jump or pin that turn at max speed. The geometry coupled with the tracking and stability of the Fox 36 lends itself to a very controlled ride. I did find myself wanting a livelier, more playful feel at certain points - especially after having ridden the new SB130 - but ultimately that is not what this bike was designed for. The end user should enjoy rowdy descents, will prioritize stability over pop and not care much about weight.
While the Switch Infinity system does well to maximize traction and minimize pedal bob, this bike is still quite a monster truck to push around. In riding a long travel bike with a 51mm offset fork, I finally understood the switch to shorter offsets with the newest crop of enduro 29ers. The front end of the bike tends to wander when riding up technical climbs, which, might not matter to you, but bothers a dirt roadie like me who loves to chase the KOM.
All in all, we offer a great package with this bike but I would make a few key substitutions.
1. Descendant 35mm bars - way too harsh
2. WTB Volt Saddle - way too much cushion for pedaling comfortably. If you plan to tackle a lot of elevation gain, I'd look for a better saddle.
All in all, the SB5.5 is a confidence-inspiring big mountain crusher. You won't be going fast on the way up, but most riders won't care. The reward of the descent will more than make up for it.

If you want to ride the Large with the 170 dropper I recommend at a minimum a 33" inseam.
If you have a 32" inseam feel free to reach out to a Gearhead and we can swap the 170 to a 150 dropper in the Large frame.

Love this bike. Pedals so nice and able to absolutely monster truck. Looks way better then the new sb150. I'm 5 9 30 inch inseam bike felt perfect the moment I sat on it in a size medium. If you're in between sizes I would size up but otherwise I think there sizing is spot on.
This Bike Makes Me Want to Ride More.

I'm 6'0" and went with a large, the fit is just about perfect for me. The SB5.5 was my first Yeti and it will certainly not be my last. The bike has a suppleness when climbing that is hard to explain. The only way I can think of describing it is that the rear wheel seems to find contact with the back side of bumps and maintains contact with ground. This allows for amazing rear wheel traction when things get loose/chunky. I almost always climb with the DPX2 shock wide open because I feel the bike doesn't need a pedal platform in the shock to stay supportive.
Once the bike is pointed downhill things get pretty exciting - The switch infinity likes to be run pretty deep in it's travel. I set mine up with almost 40% sag. The amazing part of this is that I use all the travel regularly but there is absolutely ZERO feeling of the bike bottoming out.
I ride this bike everywhere from casual lunch laps to testing myself on Enduro stages. Overall this bikes make me want to ride more... it's that good!

all you have to do is unpack, install the handlebar and wheels. set up your suspension and ride it like you stole it
its partly built. You have to pt the heels and handlebars on, stuff like that.
