Headstrong and confident.
If you're like us, you probably have fun riding just about any trail in front of you. This can be a blessing and a curse —banging out miles of smiles no matter the trail is great, but come shopping time it can be a total nightmare of weighing whether you want an enduro beast, and all-mountain conqueror, or a quick and nimble cross-country machine. A lot of bikes are great at one category, but rarely does a bike truly excel no matter the trail like the Yeti Cycles 2018 SB5+ Turq Mountain Bike Frame. With the versatility we've come to know and love from the traditional SB5, but geometry tweaks that enable plus-tires, this rock-gobbling steed is ready for any and every ride you embark on.
We didn't see massive transitions in geometry from the SB5 to its plus-sized big brother, the front triangle remained largely the same, but in the back there was a transformation to allow more tire clearance without stretching out chainstays. Still maintaining short and snappy responsiveness, the 17.2-inch stays are elevated and arced up out of the way, so they can maximize space for 3-inch tires caked in mud to clear with ease, without sacrificing the nimble playfulness of a stubby chainstay.
Just in front of the chainstays you'll see the pivotal suspension design that is Switch Infinity. Effortlessly transitioning through travel for silky smooth suspension, Switch Infinity uses a linear path that moves with little resistance, allowing for small bump compliance with minimal squat, so your ride stays smooth while climbing, with little impact on your pedaling efficiency. When you're heading downhill, you'll soak deeper into the suspension, tackling bigger drops and square edge bumps with ease. Combining the Kashima-coated stanchions of Switch Infinity with Fox's Factory DPS, Kashima coated shock is only appropriate, offering you 127mm of ultra-capable travel that's hungry to eat up rock gardens, drops, and rooty tree lines. Yeti's engineers have an eye for perfection and downhill capability, so the head tube is set up with a slacked out 67.1-degree angle for smooth and planted descents that keep you headstrong and confident in gut-twisting lines where hesitation isn't an option.
A complete package should pair a high performance frame with the top level materials, so Yeti offers the SB5+ frame in their high-modulus Turq carbon fiber. Weighing in at a miniscule 5.34lbs, the frame has a flawless balance between compliance and stiffness, with reliable manufacturing techniques that lead to minimal resin pooling, strong joints without excessive materials, and unsurpassable durability. Turq level carbon is the cream of the crop, and on the SB5+ it feels smooth, solid, and aggressive as it tackles every trail you point it down.
The SB5+ is designed to step away from the smaller tires and enter a domain of beefy, trail gripping beasts that want nothing more than to lock you in on loose corners, and keep you feeling confident as they float over gravel and chunky rocks. It has ample clearance for up to a 3-inch tire, and we recommend sticking with Yeti's recommendation on that one, anything larger will test the limits of your spacing, which can spell disaster when things get mud-caked and messy. The frame uses a 44/56mm headset and a PF92 bottom bracket for building your groupset around, but keep in mind that it is not front derailleur compatible and can only be run as a one-by setup.
- Conquer every trail your heart desires on this 27.5+ machine
- Switch Infinity offers 5 inches of supple and smooth suspension
- Descend with confidence from a slack 67.1-degree head tube
- Cream-of-the-crop Turq carbon pairs stiffness and light weight

New bike day!
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I can't say enough good things about Competitive Cyclist/Backcountry! From the moment I called them the first time until I received my bike everyone there was great. It is very refreshing ordering something online, and having the person taking the order very knowledgeable and well versed in the activity that your are ordering it for. Everyone was very professional, and from the time I ordered my bike until I received it built was only three days! Thank you Paul, and everyone else that I dealt with... You guys are great!!
Lots of traction on a great suspension
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
As the copy above kind of stated, the SB5+ is a great jack of all trades kind of bike. I mostly used mine for trail riding, but with a 150mm fork and a slacker headtube angle I had no problems with taking it on lift service and hitting some downhill trails. Obviously the biggest selling point of this frame is the plus (2.8 and 3.0) tire clearance capability. I ran mine with 2.8s and loved the amount of traction it gave me when Utah trails got all blown out and dusty. I stuck a big honking Minion DHF on the front and Rekon in the back, in hindsight I'd probably go with a tire with a bit faster knobs up front since the grip with a 2.8 is so good anyway. The switch infinity suspension is one of my favorites as it ramps up really hard towards the end of the travel, making it seem like it has way more travel than the 127mm on paper might indicate. This frame could also be a good option if you're looking for a good deal on a previous year model but also want to run more conventional 2.6 tires, as the MY18 SB5 can't clear 2.6s.
