Blends XC speed with trail-taming composure.
The Yeti ASR GX Eagle Complete Mountain Bike is a bit longer and slacker than many cross-country whippets, making it a bit more of a versatile performer on the trail. It's really a lightweight, race-ready rig that's moonlights as an agile trail bike when you're not donning a race plate. This particular frame provides all the strength and stiffness of Yeti's top-tier Turq carbon fiber, albeit with a weight penalty in the neighborhood of 250 grams (that's about 8.8 ounces). Ultimately, this carbon construction translates to rocket-like acceleration and precise handling desired by cross-country racers and trail riders alike.
Seeing that the ASR Carbon occupies much of the same territory as Yeti's newer SB4.5, it's important to detail the differences. You'll find it's packing a bit less travel at 102 millimeters, sports a steeper head tube angle of 68 degrees, and rocks a single-pivot suspension instead of Yeti's signature Switch Infinity. Also, the extra-small and small frames use 27.5in wheels for easier handling around tight switchbacks and increased stand-over for the smallest of racers and riders. All of these details make it more of a purebred XC bike, yet it's still quite cable on the trail for those desiring a trail bike that accelerates quickly.
Although more basic than Switch Infinity, the single-pivot platform reduces the frame's overall weight and increases rear triangle stiffness—both characteristics desired for an XC bike. Yeti refined the pedaling characteristics and descending composure of the ASR Carbon by working closely with FOX to fine-tune the suspension rate. What you'll find is snappy acceleration from corners and efficiency on the brutal climbs of XC, yet it's far more confident handling the rough stuff on the trail, with the shock ramping up at end stroke to prevent harsh bottom-outs.
This particular package uses a custom mix of in-house parts that are reliable and perform reliably to satisfy your racing and trail riding ambitions. You'll find SRAM's GX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain shifts smoothly across a massive range of usable gears, allowing you to easily climb up the steepest grades, then pedal back down without missing any of the range (it provides a 500-percent gear range) associated with older 2x drivetrains. SRAM Guide RS disc brakes give you powerful stopping and loads of modulation, so you won't feel like it's as on/off as other disc brakes on the market. Up front, the RockShox Reba SL Solo Air soaks up rough sections of trail with 120 millimeters of smooth travel, paired with a FOX Float Performance rear shock with 100 millimeters of travel for a bit more efficiency when you're placing power to the pedals.
