GateKeeper Tailgate Pad

The perfect companion for pick-up bed transport, the Yakima GateKeeper Tailgate securely carries your bike and four of your friends' bikes to the trailhead. Plus, the integrated HindSight tuck-away cover opens up the view for your back-up camera or looking out the rear view.

Did it's job, but the Velcro straps started failing after 6 months. Now it's almost useless. Cheap Velcro.

Downtube Strap issues

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

General: I bought this for my new ford ranger since it is the pad that ford sells at the dealer. It fits ok, but some side to side draping that was odd. The camera flap is just long enough. The camera is pretty low on the new ranger. Easy to put on. I put my two mountain bikes on it. The specialize down-tube isn't that fat but the strap is barely long enough. I put my wife cannonade (probably one of the largest MTB down-tubes) on and the down-tube strap was way too short. This seems odd since mountain bike tubes are thick. The bad: As I tighten up the down-tube strap for the first time, the stitching came out on just one of the bike down-tube straps. This is definitely the most critical stitching since it is the connection of the strap to the main blanket. This is unacceptable and showed a lack of quality I did not expect from Yakima. The good: Backcountry is great and helped me get this resolved. I cannot say enough about the great support at Backcountry. Buy with confidence that they will make it right.

Perfect fit for my 2019 GMC Sierra

I couldn’t ™find any comments about the new Silverado/ Sierra when I was looking for a gate pad. I hope this helps anyone else with the same truck. ——— Don’t know why but had a heck of a time getting a pad that fit my Sierra. Also the tailgate clearances are REALLY tight so it’s impossible to squeeze my sausage fingers through to push the middle strap to the inside. I ended up bending some metal wire to hook it from the inside but even that’s a PITA if you’re going to put it on and take it off regularly. Anyhow, the Fox would have been perfect but the straps didn’t even reach the buckle, the old version Thule had long enough straps but the handle flap opening didn’t go low enough and covered the backup camera. The new Thule and Backcountry ones (and some others) look perfect but I want to be able to close my tonneau when I’m just driving to work and there’s no bikes on the gate, not possible with the big downtube holder pads. The Dakine DLX was my first try and would have been great except it has four straps and threading even one through the middle is a pain. This Yakima has just three straps, has downtube holder pads that are small enough to still close the tonneau, and that huge handle flap tucks up out of the way of the backup camera for the 90% of the time when you’re only shuttling 4 bikes (or none). It’s also got nice heavy fuzz underneath to protect the paint and the outside feels sturdy. I only just got it so I can’t speak to the Velcro wearing out after a year. It definitely isn’t the super strong hold type of Velcro (room to improve if you’re reading Yakima) but out of the package it holds the bikes in place great for just driving down bumpy dirt roads so the strong hold Velcro might also be overkill. If you’re Baja racing, you probably want to leave the bikes at home anyhow. I’ll try to update in a year’s time if I have the same problem as others with the Velcro.

Review after 1 year - Wouldn't buy again

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Owned the GateKeeper for just over a year and was great at first, but after a year of solid use, the velcro straps have lost their grab completely, the backup camera flap doesn't close for loss of velcro grab and loss of shape from strap tension, and the flap itself is unwieldy and is not able to be secured, unless you tuck it up under itself. The soft under fabric is nice and so are the frame support pads and padded straps, except that the padded straps no longer stick shut after a year of use. The straps are mostly for decoration now.

Solid works so far Ram 1500

Put Large size on 2016 Ram 1500. Easy install. Once you do it a few times, it takes 5 minutes. Just feed 3 straps through tailgate. Straps are heavy duty. Plenty of space for back up camera.

Decent pad. Long term issues

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I hate that I have to give it a negative review because everything else about the pad is great. The large opening is perfect for my backup camera and the frame pads are well placed. It's the Velcro straps that are the issue. Worked fine at first but about 3 or 4 months in, they started to not stick as well. I'm about a year and a half into ownership now and the Velcro has totally failed. It just doesn't stick and it really makes me nervous. I've gotten to the trailhead many times with the Velcro completely undone. I constantly check my rear view mirror to make sure my bike is still there. It's a serious flaw.

Worth the money!

Familiarity:

Easy to install and is very durable material to weather the elements. No issue throwing on bikes quickly. Soft padded side keeps it from scratching the pain and can still use the rear back up camera. Worth the money forsure.

Works Nicely With Camera

The tailgate pad works perfectly for a Nissan Frontier. I like that the opening is big enough to easily use the backup camera. The padding is really nice and the whole pad feels like great quality.

Perfect protection for truck and bikes

Familiarity:

This is just perfect for keeping our bikes upright and safe on the road to the trail or destination. It keeps my truck clean and scratch free from the bikes and looks good too. Even though this is my first tailgate pad, I do highly recommend it!

Thanks for the great review Mike. Love that Goat sticker as well!

Hey Mike, From the photo, it looks like you have a Yakima Truck Rack as well? Is it the Outpost or Overhaul? How do you find the bikes fit under the rack? Easy to load four bikes without too much trouble from the truck bed rack? Thanks in advance!

Did you order a medium or large for your truck

Rad Pad

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I've owned quite a few different tailgate pads over the years, but this is one of my favorites for sure. Great fit on my truck. I've had issues in the past with pads, especially with the durability on the straps, but this thing is still going strong after some rough trips. Definitely worth it.

LOVE this thing.

Familiarity:

Yakima has a winner here. Everything about the product is of really high quality, even down to the burly straps and the felt material that goes up against your truck paint. The outer material is soft but has a slight shell/coating to it that stands up very good to weather/sun (so far). And if nothing else was great about this thing, the "hindsight" flap that flips up when you aren't using the full pad so that your truck backup camera isn't blocked is incredible and so convenient. Pumped!
