Durable and secure
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I bought this when I bought a new truck to replace my old truck bed mount. It's simple to build up, easy to use, and locks your bike securely. It also locks securely to the pickup bed so that someone can't just take the whole setup if you stop somewhere for coffee during your drive. The only reason I subtract a star may seem counterintuitive to some people, but I do not like the round base bar. The reason is this: with a round base bar I've found that even when torqued down to specs, it's possible for the Boa bike mounts to rotate down towards the pickup bed as you drive. This is due to the extra weight of some bikes and the extra leverage of a thru-axle adapter. They are particularly susceptible to this if you drive on the highway, have a relatively heavy bike, or mount the thru-axle adapter for mountain bikes. Case in point: a buddy and me did a 1500 mile cross country mountain biking and climbing trip. Through it all both bikes were secure, never came loose, and were not scratched or damaged. However, over the course of the trip, my mountain bike, which was mounted on an adapter, gradually twisted until the adapter was almost 180 degrees from its starting point. His bike, which was mounted via a standard quick release, never budged. I was able to loosen and then remount the Boa for my bike, but it will continue to be an issue due to the circular design. It's a small complaint, but one I've noticed in every truck bed mount I've seen.
But overall, this is one of the easiest and most secure ways to transport bikes in a pickup I've ever used. Just mount the bike on the bar, lock it and throw the front wheel in the cab, and everything is secure.
