WolfCage and Giant Cog Kit for Shimano 11sp

It's no secret that Wolf Tooth Components has been leading the charge for riders seeking functional, smooth-shifting 1x drivetrains on their favorite trail bikes. Realizing the need for riders desiring more low-end for powering up climbs without using a front derailleur, the WolfCage and Giant Cog Kit for Shimano 11-speed provides the massive low-end capabilities of its 49-tooth Giant Cog. This particular kit works exclusively with 11-speed Shimano cassettes and rear derailleurs.

It modifies both 11 to 42-tooth and 11 to 46-tooth Shimano cassettes, giving you a larger range of usable gears for conquering widely variable terrain. The Giant Cog Kit comes with a smaller 18-tooth cog that replaces both the 17 and 19-tooth cogs on your cassette, making room for the larger 49-tooth cog without upsetting gearing. Wolf Tooth also includes their signature WolfCage, which replaces the stock inner cage and upper jockey wheel on your Shimano 11-speed rear derailleur to accommodate the wider range of gears.

Please note, this Giant Cog is only compatible with the following Shimano 11-speed rear derailleurs: XTR 9 GS, XT 8 GS, XT 8 SG, SLX 7 GS, and XT Di2 M8050 GS. GS denotes Shimano's medium cage and SGS is their categorization for longer cage versions.

    • Add extra low-end to your 11-speed Shimano drivetrain
    • 7075-T6 aluminum construction for longevity and low weight
    • 49t giant cog gives you bail-out for spinning up steep climbs
    • 18t cog replaces 17t and 19t cogs for optimal gearing in small cogs
    • WolfCage replaces inner cage, upper jockey wheel on your derailleur
    • Works with select Shimano 11-speed rear derailleurs (see copy)

    Solid product but......

I'm giving the product itself 5 stars. It deserves it. Well made, easy install (with the right components) and you can see they put thought into the design. My issue is in Backcountry's item description. Says compatible with Shimano SLX GS rear derailleurs. It is not. The Wolf Tooth cage doesn't line up. The mounting holes for the cage are 4mm too short. I have looked all over Wolf Tooth's website and can't find any mention of it being compatible with the SLX derailleur. And unfortunately you need their cage to clear the large diameter of the cog. Get this if you need it to round out your drivetrain just make sure you are using either an XT or XTR derailleur.

Better on 11 to 42-tooth cassette

    I've used it several times

I installed this on an existing 11 to 46-tooth Shimano cassettes. It works great and shifting is smooth, but the difference between the 46 and the 49 is not very perceptible. It even looks a bit weird since they're almost the same size. If you have a 11 to 42, highly recommended. If you already have 46, the gain is not that much.

    This works great

    I've used it several times

I bought this after considering both the One Up kit and this one. I ended up with this one due to the additional shift points it has. So far it has been great. Getting the RD adjusted was a little tricky but I was able to make it work. I highly recommend it.

    Eagle-like shimano

I've put it through the wringer

I'm stuck in a shimano world. But always envious of the SRAM folks pushing the envelope of wide range gearing. Thankfully the Wolf Tooth folks keep coming to the rescue as Shimano continues to chase SRAM in getting us luddites the wide range gearing we covet. I was an early adopter of the Wolf Tooth gear extenders when they made 42t kits for shimano 36t ten speed rear ends. Now we're up to 49t for 11speed--approaching 'eagle' range without the eagle money (the new Sram GX kit notwithstanding). I've got these on several bikes and with the reasonable price, on my spare wheelsets (my fattie goes from 26x4.6 winter shoes to 27.5x3.8 summer for instance; and another mtb that goes 27.5x3 to 29er regularly). One final note--its subtle--but I've also got a 50t shark tooth conversion on one bike (they came out before wolf tooth had the 49). I do think I see/feel/experience a difference (improvement) in shifting with the wolf tooth. They claim 4 up-shift points per rotation with the 49t vs competitors 50t. When you need your bailout gear for the unexpected grunt climb the more rapid engagement is appreciated. The install of the derailleur inner cage is breezy compared to the shenanigans of the shark tooth. Both brands of range extenders work well--this just works a little better in my estimation.
