Cento1HY Ultegra e-bike
What do you get when you add a powerful ebikemotion rear hub motor to Wilier's lightweight Cento1 chassis? Well, that would be its all-new Cento1HY Ultegra e-bike. Coming in at a claimed weight of 11.9kg or just over 26 pounds it's one of the lightest e-road bikes on the market and not far off traditional disc road bikes either. So whether you're just getting into the sport and want to keep up with your buddies, have a medical condition keeping you from exerting yourself too hard, or you love the feeling of speed, but don't quite have the time to put in all those hours of training, the Cento1HY is worth a look.
Turning the system on and off as well as accessing its 3 power-assist modes is an easy affair thanks to a control button that's built right into the top tube. The motor is powered by a 36-volt battery that's housed inside the downtube offering up to 250 watts of power and 40Nm of torque assist at speeds up to 26km/h. The electric motor has the ability to connect to your smartphone via the ebikemotion app, allowing you to track riding metrics such as speed, distance, time, and battery life. The app also provides route navigation, weather alerts, and Strava integration. Remarkably, the motor, battery, and controls only contribute 3.7kg to the bike’s total weight. Because the motor is housed in the hub and the battery inside the frame, it's very difficult to even distinguish the Cento1HY as an e-bike. The battery has a range of around 1000m of altitude gain and an additional external battery is available separately if you care to double that elevation.
Those that have found e-bikes due to health conditions please take note of one of our favorite features: you can pair your heart rate monitor to your smartphone and set a maximum heart rate in the app. When you reach the upper end of the limit, the motor kicks in with power, reducing the workload and thus your heart rate.
With all that excitement about the electronics, it might be easy to forget about the 46 Ton monocoque carbon frame and fork construction, the same material proven on its race machines and prized for its light weight and stiffness. Wilier uses an endurance geometry with a slightly taller head tube and shorter reach providing a more relaxed and less racy position, perfect for taking in those longer distances this machine allows for. Drivetrain components consist of Shimano's workhorse Ultegra mechanical group with powerful hydraulic disc brakes. It's also important to note that with the placement of the motor in the hub and not at the bottom bracket or crank allows Wilier to build the Cento1HY with a Q-factor the same as a traditional road bike.

A REVELATION & A CONVERT
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I purchased the Wilier Cento1HY (Hybrid) in December 2018 and have ridden it about 300 miles and it has been a REVELATION! The Cento1HY has allowed me to return to riding my previous distances and total ascent when I was fully fit and healthy.
Here’s the story: In June 2017 I had a serious cycling accident in which I broke my right hip and right shoulder. After 3 unsuccessful surgeries, I had a right hip replacement in August 2018. I was finally able to gradually return to cycling in October 2018 after having missed almost 1 1/2 years of riding. I previously averaged about 5000 miles/year.
The Cento has been a revelation to me about the value and usefulness of a pedal assist bike to recover my fitness and to return to the joy of group riding much sooner than I ever thought possible!
I am a CONVERT to pedal assist bikes and this Wilier is a fantastic machine even when riding with the assist turned off.
The full mechanical Ultegra 8000 set up provides smooth, precise, and crisp shifting and the front derailleur shifting is on par with my Di2 - upshifts to the big ring take little effort and are very smooth. The Ultegra hydraulic disk brakes provide incredible, smooth and powerful stops, they require just gentle firm pressure on the lever. Modulation is much better than standard rim calipers.
The Ebikemotion rear hub motor is rated at 250 watts and is more than enough on low power to make 10% grades feel like 5%. When I use the power assist I very rarely use more than the Lowest power setting and on flatter stretches I will even turn it off to increase my level of effort.
When the pedal assist is active, the engagement and disengagement of the motor is a relatively smooth transition, it is just barely noticeable. The shift into and out of pedal assist is not abrupt.
On my rides to date, given the distances and total ascent that I’ve ridden, I average just over 1% of battery capacity per mile. Today for example, our group rode 42 miles with 2,700 feet of ascent and I used 44% battery capacity. YMMV depending upon the level of power you chose and how much of your own pedaling effort you contribute.
Remember, this is a pedal assist bike - no pedaling, no motor assist. And it’s only active to just over 15 mph, so you really only get assistance when the gradient increases and you are ascending.
The geometry of the Cento is very comfortable, it’s similar to my 2016 Roubaix. The reach is on the shorter side so your position can be a little more upright if desired.
The ride is very smooth, but a little stiff. Or I should say it’s noticeably stiffer than my 2016 Roubaix. The Cento rides on 28mm Tires that does provide some compliance. I swapped out the Zaffiros for 28mm Conti 4000S II’s as well as Vittoria latex tubes. I think this has helped soften the ride and I run my tires at about 60/70 psi front/rear. I also installed a carbon seatpost which vastly reduced the buzz transmitted to my rear end and also smoothed out the smaller bumps.
Handling of the Cento on turns and descents is confident and controlled, it’s definitely not twitchy, I’d compare it favorably to my Roubaix. The Cento1’s handling is confident and the extra weight of the motor/battery does increase downhill acceleration!
The Cento1HY is just a beautiful looking “ebike” that doesn’t look like an ebike! It has nice lines and graceful tube shapes and my fellow riders didn’t know it had a motor and battery until I told them!
I LOVE this Wilier Hybrid! It is a joy to ride, makes climbing fun again, allows me to rejoin my group rides until I’m fit enough to ride my Roubaix, and it looks great. The frame is very nicely finished, the fit and paint job are very high quality, and the FSA components are excellent.
If you need a pedal assist bike to recover from injury, or keep up with younger/fitter riders, or to allow your spouse/partner to join you on more “energetic” rides, then this Wilier is for you!
