Why We Like The Wild Country Revo Belay Device

The Revo Belay Device is an assisted braking device with features that help us optimize climber safety. The Revo works in both directions to minimize accidents that occur from incorrectly loaded belay devices and doesn't require any deviation from the standard belaying technique. No special locking carabiner is required either, so we can use our favorite locker on our rack.

smooth and safe

The Revo feeds rope easily and smoothly during lead belaying. The backup autobrake feature is terrific and gives me an added sense of security while climbing. I think anyone who does a lot of single pitch climbing would benefit from the safety and performance of this device.

easy to use and easy to teach other how to use it since it uses the same belay motions as an ATC. only 9/10 due to difficulty handling larger rope and the rope causing the brakes to engage when they do not need to. Its great for a beginner or expert. Its certainly a rare type of belay device, at least where I live so you will get attention for having it. Overall I feel extremely safe using it and so do my partners.

I have been using this since it was released. It has enabled me to climb on the weekends I have my kids with me, as long as I set up an anchor my oldest kid (16) who is significantly lighter than me can perform a lead belay, top rope belay and a lower. He can do these things and I have peace of mind knowing that he is belaying in a fashion which is identical to using a standard belay device (ATC, Pivot etc.) and also that if for some reason his standard belay fails the Revo will lock. This is a great device for a single-rope, single pitch, day at the crag. It's virtually fool-proof to thread as it is symmetrical. It has a nice easy pull through action perfect for when the leader needs rope to clip, and also has a very smooth lowering action. If you are working a route this may not work for you as it is tricky to activate the lock-off feature while the rope is weighted.

not my choice for lead belaying

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I got this with the intention of lead rope soloing and it has worked well for me in that regard. I hoped that it would also be good for other uses, but i prefer my Gri Gri for most other belaying. It is easy to feed and catch with. It catches fast. Every time I've caught a lead fall with it I pull in an arms length of slack and pull down to brake, but the assisted lock feature catches before friction from the tradition tube action does. My only gripe is that the assisted brake doesn't stay locked as well as the gri gri so taking multiple falls and rests means the belayer has to do the braking by holding the rope in the brake position. I thought I might be able to work around this by pulling the brake strand off to the side of the device and popping up the brake, but that is harder that I tought it would be.

Innovative smooth lead belaying

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I have been using this device for a while now and I absolutely love it. The Revo functions like a tube style belay device and pays out slack even smoother than my ATC. Great for cragging. Not the best for projecting as proper technique requires a lot of force on the brake hand compared to GriGri or classic tube style.I like knowing that a fall would be stopped even if something were to happen to my belayer. It is a bit heavy and bulky but worth the investment.

This is great to use when partner is lead climbing, very easy to feed rope when clipping. I feel like the back up locking feature could lock just a tad bit quicker, you really have to fall quick for it to catch but it is designed as a backup so I understand. The downside would be if your belaying a heavy climber who also needs to rest or hang often it will wear out the belayer. Wearing a glove on break hand helps. This would be great for indoor climbing and single pitch sport routes!

This is great addition to the world of assisted belay devices as this one is essential a mechanical tube style device. Belay as you would with any other tube device with the added confidence that the Revo will lock if something goes wrong with the belay. It feeds very smoothly but does not provide as much friction when the rope is weighted which makes it a tough device if the climber needs a extra tight belay or if the climber weights the rope often.
