Why We Like The Friend Camming Device

Wild Country's cams have been a climber's best friend for three and a half decades, and each year Wild Country modifies it to meet the needs of modern climbing. Our favorite part of the latest Friend Camming Device has to be the extendable sling that reduces rope drag on wandering trad climbs. The smooth handling, long-lasting durability, and twin axle design are also what makes this cam our closest Friend.

This is my first camming device from Wildcountry. I am super happy with the quality and will be buying more FRIENDS.

Solid piece of pro, similar to other cams on the market but with noticeable improvements like the extendable sling. Just on the edge of being big enough to warrant a trigger keeper, but I haven’t had much issues with the lobes snagging on things as you climb.

Great Cams

I have now used this cam on several climbs and they are incredibly dependable and hold well. Extending slings are a nice bonus!

My first set of cams! The Friends have great action on the lobe retraction and are very intuitive to use with the extendable sling. Used these in Moab to get up some of my first crack climbs at Wall Street. Make sure you coordinate with your friend's Friends so you can get enough of a single size to tackle some of the sweet splitters out there.

Excellent alternative to BD C4s to round out the rack. Colors and size ranges match BD so it takes no extra effort sifting through your gear on route to find what you're looking for. Larger sizes don't have keeper tabs to reduce bulk when racked up on your harness. For the weight conscious, there is a negligible difference in weight between BD and WC cams when considering the full range. At the larger side (2 - 4) BD cams are ever so slightly lighter by a few grams, and on the other side (.4 - 1) WC cams are ever so slightly lighter by a few grams -- not enough to truly make a difference. The weight savings are picked up by needing fewer alpines when only short extensions are needed. Extending the sling on a Friend gives you roughly an 8 inch or 20cm extension, compared to the fixed length of roughly 4 inches or 10cm on a BD C4.

As good as C4, without the premium

Keeps it simple. I don’t love their smaller sizes, but .75 and up these work the same as BD. The extendable sling is nice too. Would be nice to have trigger keepers on the 4.

Solid cam, comparable to BD C4. Smooth trigger and lobe movement, and good ergonomics with decent balance and handling. A little heavy when compared to BD ultralight cam, but does have a useful extendable dynema sling.

Great Cams!

I bought .4-3 to build my trad rack this past spring, I liked the design and they were cheaper than BD. I have been using them for about 6 months. They have worked great so far, although I haven’t whipped on anything yet (thankfully). Extendable draws are nice although I don’t always like using them, great if you need just a little extra length to reduce rope draw or walking. Will continue to use them and probably go with wild country for any more cams in the future.
