These pants are LIGHT. Full-length zippers fasten at both ends with velcro tabs. Nice fabrics. Nice construction. Nice design. Major problem: elastic at cuffs is snug - even over a single pair of lightweight ski socks. There is no way the cuffs on the pants I returned would fit over any kind of boot. Similarly, elastic at the waist (my waist is 32") was also tight, even with the built-in web belt loosened all the way and with me wearing just a lightweight synthetic t-shirt. Too bad: these are otherwise really nice pants.

These are killer!!! I've only used them twice I will add that fact, both times at the end of long hut trip days last winter - But these do the job advertised and so much more!!! - Full length side zippers - Check - Premium 850-fill goose down = Fantastic loft - Comfortable beyond belief - Check Check Maybe for future R&D pockets would be a nice feature for the hands both other than that these are killer!!!

Many thanks, James! Leta Western Mountaineering Rep

I bought these pants for my daughter in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada. She already had a jacket by Western Mountaineering and requested the pants for her birthday. She loves them!

I am impressed with these pants. Typical WM quality. The fabric reminds me of my Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer down jacket. WM calls it Microlite XP. It is feather light, yet it seems durable enough if you are careful. It is ripstop. The Gore Windstopper on the knee and seat area is more durable but still exceedingly light. Don't think normal Gore Windstopper. This Windstopper fabric is feather weight- not as light as the XP, but incredibly light. The zippers are a perfect weight/size. The WM website says they are YKK brand. But these use IDEAL zippers, for what it's worth. . The cuffs and waist are are stretchy so you don't need to unzip either unless putting on over boots. I was hoping they came with a small stuff sack but they did not. There are no pockets. I'll try to figure out the optimal size ( in liters, I guess) for a stuff sack for these pants. Better to use one than jam the pants loose in the backpack. There is more than enough down fill, but not so much that they look like clown pants! They compress really well since the down is high loft and the fabric is light. Did I say these pants were light?!😉 I'm 6'4" and 200 lbs. My waist is 37" and the XL work great. I wanted them big enough to fit over a layer and they do so nicely. There are not a lot of down pants out there. I considered the Feathered Friends Helios but decided on these due to the Windstopper additions. And, the XL were a bit longer at 34" in the leg length. I recommend these if you're in the market. They'll definately keep you warm on a cold hike or to extend the limit of your sleeping bag. BRAVO, Western Mountaineering and to backcountry.com for your continued advice, great customer service and fast shipping. This garment is a true tour-de-force! UPDATE I tried one of my small MH compression sacks on these pants and the size is perfect. The sack is labeled 6"x 13", I assume measured flat. When filled with the pants and compressed and tightened, it is about 7" long with a diameter of about 5". Perfect. Actually, you don't really need a compression sack, just a stuff sack to protect them. The other night, my son borrowed these and they kept him warm at 0 degrees and -25 windchill in his 0 degree WM sleeping bag. He wore them over a pair of light fleece stretch tights. He thought they were "awesome", so I gave them to him as a Christmas present and bought a second pair for myself!

These lightweight, very packable and incredibly warm down pants accompanied me to a recent winter trip to the Arctic. Initially thinking they were overkill, the were absolute lifesavers while travelling through the arctic wilderness. They zipped on and off easily over my goretex and were perfect for the times in between climbing and skiing. I know pack them in my emergency kit to help keep a potential injured victim warm while waiting for or during transport. They are simply amazing. My only gripe is that the material, though necessarily light, is very sensitive to cuts and nicks. A stuck zipper actually punctured the material and needed patching. A little tight on the ankles as well.

Used these on a winter camping ski trip to Svalbard in March. These pants were integral in basecamp as well as the snowmobile rides. I really enjoyed how easy it was to get in and out of them with the full zips down the side. After skiing a line or getting into basecamp this was the first thing I put on.

My life got so much better now I have down pants. Not sure why I never had them before. Such a great addition. I used these pants in the Arctic, in Svalbard on a ski mission in the heart of winter. Our trip was in March and we spent 12 days camped on a glacier in -20C temps plus wind chill and these pants were probably the single best piece of gear I brought. I would have survived without them, but certainly not been as comfortable as I was. Sitting on a snowmobile for transport across glaciers, in camp, at lunch. The side zips make them easy to put on even with gloves and they are so small and light that they will live in my pack most days ski touring back home also. Only comments would be the lower leg is very slim on these pants and makes going over a ski pant and boot odd but I imagine they are for climbers so you don't snag crampons. Material is light and a little fragile, but these aren't for abuse as your outer layer. Treat them with respect and they are bomber. Sized for wearing over the top of your outer layer so order your regular size. Do yourself a favour and get some down pants!

Absolutely the Best

I purchased these pants not too long ago and they are by far the best quality, warmest, and amazing fit down pants on the market. True to sizing, Recommended for cold mountain weather. Not sure why Back Country will not carry more Western Mountaineering gear. Way to cool of gear. Check out their sleeping bags as well. Off the Charts!!!

Warmth and flexability

These pants are are incredibly lightweight and extremely warm. I was amazed at how thin these pants were. I purchased them to try out on Aconcagua this last season and they performed incredibly. The Pertex fabric on the seat and on the knees is really nice which allows you to sit and kneel without the concern of saturating your pants. The design of the pants really articulates with movement in the knee and hips, which really allows for dynamic movement and stride. A lot of down pants really cut into your gait especially with a parka, but these pants keep a really low profile and considering they are 850 down fill that is a great accomplishment by the makers at Western Mountaineering. I paired these pant for numerous reasons with the Millet Expert Down and they paired quite nice with one another. Some technical notes I really like about these is the full side zips. Some manufacturers are using this design but some still lack that integration and it is really handy getting them on and off when climbing and running into impromptu weather systems. The other technical feature that I really like is the articulation in the knees. It almost reminded me of Arc'teryx design or some of the Norrona pant wear with articulated knees which makes a smoother movement for ascending.

I'm worried about the size-zips being...

I'm worried about the size-zips being uncomfortable for side-sleeping. Has anyone had that issue?

From what I know I don't show anyone complaining about the side zips being uncomfortable. Most people have said these are extremely comfortable, and if you're unhappy with your purchase you're more than welcome to return it. We have one of the best return policies out there!
