Why We Like The Union 101 29in Boost Wheelset

We Are One Composites launched into the mountain bike scene fully just in recent years, but while the company may be on the newer side, their technology certainly seems anything but rookie. It all started with their Movement line, which brought carbon fiber manufacturing back to North America, promising that not all carbon hoops are manufactured the same way, and boasting a molding process that improves layup precision and accuracy for reliable wheels that can handle hard charging and enduro racing. So far their wheels have received universal praise for their strength and positive ride quality, but also for being offered at an approachable price point—at least for Canadian-made wheels that are built from US-sourced carbon fiber and backed by a lifetime warranty.

We Are One crafts the Union rims from its Revolution molding process, which boasts even more precise carbon layup than previous designs. It features an all-new rim shape that allows a reduction in radial stiffness, and use a bit less fiber over all, all the while boosting impact resistance for a rim that doesn't falter after a big hit. The shape pairs nicely with its unique layup to build a system that plays well together, providing more support to each component of the rim for a resilient wheel that's ready for it all.

The Union 101's are designed for high-level enduro racing, built for riders who ride hard, ride often, and want to worry as little as possible their setup. The Union rim is lighter than We Are One's previous enduro rim The Agent, yet brings a dramatic increase in strength along with improved radial compliance. This makes for a wheel that accelerates more quickly, tracks better through rocks and roots, and is better able to withstand impacts—an impressive feat considering there were very few complaints with The Agent to begin with. The wheels are built on I9's new 101 hub, which takes some queues from the Torch and Hydra, but goes in a more economical direction that sheds teeth, and offers 4-degrees of engagement. The 101 hub offers a more economical approach to Industry Nine, pairing six dual-phased pawls with a 45-tooth drive ring for quick engagement. While it isn't quite as snappy as the Torch, or the telepathically-quick Hydra, it still performs with 4-degree engagement that blows most of the competition out of the water. The six pawls connect with 90-points of engagement, with two pawls engaging at any given moment for reliable power.

Handcrafted perfection!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I've been luck over the last few years to ride some of the best carbon and allow wheelsets available. Recently I decided it was time to give the We Are One Union wheels a try and I'm stunned with how good these wheels are. Comparing these to two of my favorite carbon wheelsets (ENVE M730 & Reserve 30) I find these strike the perfect balance of being stiff and yet still compliant. Comparing these to the M730, I immediately noticed these held a line through rough stuff much the same way but were noticeably more compliant. The Reserve 30 wheels are more compliant than the Unions however they don't hold a line quite as well. Comparing the quality of the carbon layup based on looks is difficult however, much like the ENVE rims We Are One isn't hiding their layup behind a painted finish. Both rims are beautifully crafted here in North America and both offer excellent warranties. Speaking of warranties the Reserve wheels have the industry's best warranty with a lifetime warranty/replacement policy. I can attest to how good that warranty is after breaking a rim and contacting their warranty team. I had a new wheelset (not rim) in my hand 24 hours later. We Are One also offers a lifetime warranty with a no questions asked replacement policy. If you break a rim they will replace it ASAP and that leaves me less worried when I'm riding rough terrain and need to focus on the trail. The 1/1 hubs are excellent. They provide nearly instant 4% of engagement which is handy when tackling technical climbs. The fact that you can get such an amazing hub laced to an industry-leading carbon rim for under $1400 USD makes these wheels a winner in my book. Overall I have to say these are my favorite wheels to date. If you're carbon curious and don't want to invest too much money into your first carbon wheelset I would recommend you pick up a set of these. You won't regret it.

I recently had to replace some cracked Stan's Arch rims on my 29er trail bike. As I've been trending towards rowdier descents, I wanted to move to more of an wider enduro-style wheel. I was intrigued by carbon but wasn't willing to shell out crazy money for top of the line wheelsets. Thus I somewhat reluctantly settled on these, wondering if it would be worth the money. After my first ride on them -including a few thousand feet of fast, chunky, downhill- I have no doubts whatsoever that it was worth it. 1. The wheel is noticeably more precise than my old wheels. I was able to pick my line and stick to it much better than before. Previously scary washed-out sections of trail were rendered much less concerning. The improvement was honestly much more than I expected. In terms of ride comfort, I honestly didn't notice much of a difference, which is a good thing. I was concerned that these would deliver a harsher ride, which they definitely did not. 2. The i9 101 hub is amazing. I know it's not the Hydra with less than sub-1 degree engagement, but 4 degrees is still a massive improvement over the 15 degrees of my DT Swiss 370, and the price is right. It's also much quieter than the Hydra, which I really appreciate. Having done some research, I also like the traditional flange design (vs. straight pull) as it should be easier to maintain and find replacement spokes. While straight pull makes intuitive sense, when's the last time you heard of J-bend spoke breaking at the bend? 3. Made in North America with an awesome warranty. Even well-manufactured stuff might break and, especially with carbon, there's no substitute for a supportive and responsive manufacturer. I love that We Are One is nearby in BC. I have little doubt that they'll help if I need it. I wouldn't have that same confidence with carbon coming from Asia. Same goes for the hub, made here in the USA.
