KICKR Power Trainer

With the updated KICKR Power Trainer, Wahoo offers a straightforward alternative to rocker-plate technology, improves power accuracy, and ease calibration. To keep us from having to source a rocker-plate for our home trainer, Wahoo resourcefully adds five-degrees of side-to-side movement to the KICKR thanks to the new AXIS Action Feet, which replace the standard fixed feet on the KICKR. It’s a simple, convenient, and practical improvement to achieve a more realistic and tunable training experience. During pedaling, the feet allow the trainer to sway back and forth, which Wahoo claims also reduces rider fatigue. Included with the KICKR is a set of AXIS Feet with three stiffness levels, allowing a tunable amount of movement based on your riding goals. Lock the feet out for a typical session or go fully open for full-tilt, virtual races, or any combination that feels comfortable.

On the surface, the new KICKR appears unchanged from the previous generation; however, updated hardware improves power accuracy from +/-2% to +/-1%. With the sharp rise of online racing, precise power readings are critical for preserving the authenticity and reliability of data coming in from racers worldwide. And with the increased accuracy, you’ll have more confidence that you are training to the target numbers. Further extending the accuracy of the new KICKR is a self-calibrating feature that removes the need for manual calibration.

Wahoo maintains features that have made the KICKR its flagship indoor trainer. The electromagnetically controlled flywheel feels natural and road-like, and continuous, wireless communication with online apps and virtual cycling courses creates an immersive training experience. The KICKR replicates a maximum of a 20% incline and can generate 2200-watts of resistance should you ever be able to reach that supernatural ability. The direct-mount style trainer includes an 11-speed cassette and adapters for quick-release and thru-axles. However, XD/XDR cassettes require a separate freehub purchase. And the KICKR supports three, simultaneous Bluetooth connections and is compatible with ELEMNT computers, KICKR HEADWIND, and KICKR CLIMB for a complete indoor training setup.

  • Updated indoor smart trainer for the dedicated cyclist
  • KICKR AXIS Feet enhance ride feel with five-degrees of side to side motion
  • Precision power readings nail accuracy to within +/-1%
  • Calibration-free setup removes the need for manual calibrations
  • Low-noise operation is ideal for small homes and apartment living
  • AXIS Feet work with previous KICKR models (not KICKR Core)
  • Self-calibration is not backwards compatible

Once I set it up, it's been great!

I've put it through the wringer

At first I set it up wrong, trying to use the thru axel it comes with on my 2020 Emonda, and it didn't fit. The directions tell you to watch a video, and I followed what the actor did, which was wrong for my bike. Once I figured out that I needed the included adapter and the thru axel my bike came with (if I had read the directions instead of the video I would have caught this), all has been perfect. Very easy to set up, just read the instructions thoroughly, and you're off to the races. I use it with Zwift, and have been making FTP gains. I highly recommend the Kickr for indoor training.

Buyer beware!!!

I've used it several times

Loved this product out of the box. However, when I switched from my "beater" bike to my "good" bike for the winter months, I had all kinds of shifting issues. Both bikes have the same drive train(Ultra), but could never reach a satisfying setup with the newer bike. Was all set to take trainer and bike to my local shop when I stumbled on something on the Wahoo website. There I found a list of "Non-compatible bikes for Wahoo Kickr.", and wouldn't you know it, my "good" bike is on that list!! List includes all 2020 and 2021 Trek road bikes, (I have a 2020 Domane!!) Other makes and models also on the list. Switched back to my 2017 Domane and everything is running smoothly. Would rather be riding the old bike outdoors when weather permits, but at least I have an indoor option.

So how is that the trainers fault? Use the old bike and stop crying. My bike is 1995. Maybe mom can buy you the correct bike.

Thanks for the post!

Umm... "I hate my life" Richard. Some of us appreciate reviewers sharing that kind of information so we don't waste time going thru the same situation. Sorry about your jealousy problem. And thank you for the review, Frank.

Good info, I have a 2015 Domane 9.5 and I'm now looking for the appropriate power trainer.. I'll pay attention to the foot notes...

Great equipment

I've put it through the wringer

You can't go wrong with the Kickr. Wahoo's customer service is spectacular. After a year and a half of heavy use they replaced my Kickr when the sensors needed repair.

Is it compatible with Garmin head units? Say the 810?

Hi William, The Garmin 810 does not have FE-C protocol so it will not control the trainer, however if you are using the Garmin to record your workout then yes it will do that. If you are looking to have a head unit control the trainer to do specific targeted workouts you will want to look at getting a 530,830, or 1030. Cheers

What derailleur setups does this trainer support out of the box? I currently use Campy record.

Hi Randy, Great questions. The trainer comes with a HG freehub body with a Shimano / SRAM style 11 spd cassette. It will work with Campy 11 spd systems but would not be as smooth. If you plan on using Campy you will want to swap out the driver body. Item # WHA0005 will allow you to run a campy cassette. Be sure to check to make sure you order the correct one for the trainer you have. In this case you want to select the one "KICKR 2018+". The bullet points in the description on that page will say it's for earlier models but as long as you select the one that says 2018 plus it is the correct one.
