Why We Like The ELEMNT ROAM GPS Bike Computer

The ELEMNT ROAM GPS Bike Computer from Wahoo takes everything we loved about its BOLT model and gives it some significant updates making it the most powerful and intuitive computer from the brand to date. It's not only Wahoo's first color screen display, but it also added on-device navigation capabilities, as well as integration with Singletracks and MTB Project. These features not only make the ROAM easier to see and use, but it can also help you find routes and get you safely back on course or to a specific waypoint when you need to most.

Thankfully, Wahoo kept its excellent Element Companion App as the setup and interaction app for the new ROAM. It uses the simple interface of pairing your Apple or Android smartphone to customize settings, configure workout pages, upload routes, and link sensors. Additionally, it stores your ride history and automatically syncs workouts to your favorite training apps.

Once up and running, you'll immediately notice it's all new vibrant color screen. Its 2.7in screen is slightly larger than the 2.2in display of the BOLT and its durable Gorilla Glass lens makes viewing your data and following routes easier than ever. And to keep you on course with mapping and fitness, Quicklook LEDs provide an easy way to monitor power, heart rate, speed, turn-by-turn directions, and other notifications. The BOLT provided LEDs across the top of the computer and the ROAM adds to this with LEDs on the vertical axis as well. And while you're in a custom curated data page, its Perfect View Zoom, afforded by its side buttons, lets you zoom in and out for larger font or more fields.

Another area where Wahoo really shines is with its navigation. With the ROAM you can navigate to a saved location or a point on the map directly from the screen. It will find the most direct course and automatically get you rerouted back on course. And with its Singletracks and MTB Project integration, you'll get navigational help while on the trails too. You can get turn-by-turn directions via on-screen prompts and scrolling LEDs from uploaded routes or by using the Take Me Anywhere feature that generates cycling optimized routes with turn-by-turn cues. Other mapping features include Live Tracking that lets you locate friends or other ELEMNT users with a real-time location on your map screen, making meeting up easier, or the ability to share your location with friends and family by text or email. Lastly, its GPS capabilities and software integration let you tap into Strava Live Segments which alerts you before the segment begins, displays your progress status for the goal you set, and even gives you a unique Final Push when you are close to hitting a PR or taking a KOM.

Its Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and ANT+ connectivity allows for easy firmware updates and pairing with sensors that read power, heart rate, speed, cadence, and even muscle oxygen. If you have the sensor, it can display the data. It even reads your electronic drivetrain, displaying data from Shimano Di2, SRAM eTap, Campagnolo EPS, and even FSA's new WE system with details such as gear display and battery life. Lastly, the ROAM pairs with its KICKR Smart Trainers allowing you to train in four different modes: Route simulation, ERG, Level, or Passive allowing you to record your workout while controlled by another app.

2 Lemons

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I ordered this as a replacement for my wife’s unit that finally died. It wouldn’t charge — the longer that it was plugged in “charging”, the less charge that the unit carried. So I returned it and bought another. Same deal. I wrote customer support and they gave me a bunch of suggestions, none of which works. I don’t know if there was just a bad bunch of these things, but I’m through trying. I should mention, I have an older version Elemnt that is still going strong. I’m not willing to see if the 3rd time would be the charm . . . . Moving on to a Garmin!

Unreliable w/ Poor Support

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Weight:
180

I've owned this device since May 2021, and used it in multiple week+ tours. When it works, it works simply & nicely. Alas, it is unreliable about when it will work and when it will simply fail to work sometimes in a grand fashion. At this point, it is also obscolescent being surpassed by the Kangeroo. It has also always been deficient relative to the Garmin for lack of any elevation data on the map screen. Most recently, I went on a 12 day trip on a portion of the Great Divide in Montana. I carefully prepped the device by syncing 2 routes (in addition to all the other hundreds of routes I have stored in Komoot & RideWIthGPS). On arrival at start, all routes were in the device and I rode the first route without issue. But the next day, ALL my routes were GONE. There was nothing, not a one, stored in the device. Quite problematic as the Wahoo was to be my primary navigational device on what is often a challenging navigational situation. So, the device because almost useless aside from seeing where I've been & the road network. Entirely unacceptable. It loses data in other ways as well. On this same ride, it failed to record the first day's ride despite normal shut down procedure (Stop ride / yes / power off). That info is gone. The device has done this multiple times on prior rides, simply failing to record or save an entire day's info. Poof! I've long comlained to Wahoo that there is no way to currate the routes stored in the device. That is, to be more selective about what is on the Wahoo device versus what is stored on my connected apps such as RideWIthGPS. Currently, there is NO way to do so aside from entirely deleting routes from the apps. So there is no way I could have deleted my planned route -- or the hundreds of other routes formerly stored. My GF also has a Roam. She's had some of the same problems, but then also had a situation one night in which the device would continuously reboot. She attempted the problem solving found on their web site for such a situation and had not luck. Until she couldn't sleep and spent an early morning HOUR trying the same thing over & over until it finally worked. Me, I'd call it what it is: poorly designed software that is an ongoing warranty issue. The lack of elevation data on the map screen is a severe disadvantage when navigating, at times. If you're in a remote area with only the road you're on (or no road at all), you have nothing to guide you. Terrain features simply don't appear. This is in contrast to later model Garmins. You MUST use apps such a Komoot, Strava or RideWithGPS in order to get route info into our out of the Wahoo. There is no such service from Wahoo itself. Navigating to a nearby area is difficult to impossible. That is, if you want to find what is down the road to the left or right, and you can't answer that by zooming out, then you basically can't answer it at all. Unlike a touchscreen device, you can't easily pan the screen. And there is no way to measure the distance between here & there. I presented a list of more than a dozen faults & failures to Wahoo support a year ago, then the current problem noted above, and their "support" has been unable to say much more than "sorry." Certainly nothing that would resolve the many issues nor prevent in the future. To be fair & complete, one advantage the Wahoo has is that it is managed from its companion cell phone app, which is reasonably complete & simple. So set up was pretty painless. That includes managing the fields displayed on each of any number of screens you wish to define. So I have a map screen w/ speed, a basic data screen with distance, time, elevation, etc, another focused on RPM, another on heart rate, another of ride summary data, etc. You flip between screens with a simple button push.

Best bike computer I've ever had

I waited a long time before writing a review. It's a really good bike computer. I use my bike almost daily and not only to exercise. The Wahoo is used every time i take my bike out. The screen is easy to read. The maps are not always on. But I love the way I can create maps when I plan a trip ahead of going out. I just completed a bike packing tour and the maps where always accurate. It synchronizes with the app in my phone without any issues. And I get all the info I want from my rides. Why do I give it 4 stars instead of 5. I love the product. But I think it could be improved. When I don't take the follow the route planned, it flashes the red led lights for a few seconds. I think there should be a better warning or at least the red lights to flash for a lot longer. I also think there should be a way to reroute instead of going back to where I was supposed to turn. It will be also great to be able to scroll on the maps. It only allows me to zoom in/out.

User friendly, not suitable for enduranc

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Good: The screen pages are super easy to set up using the companion app on your phone. The LED's are nice for navigation and power targets. There is no glare on the screen and is very easy to read in all light conditions. Bad: I have done 3 races over 12hrs and each time the navigation map has completely frozen and is useless. Even stopping or powering down the unit does nothing to unfreeze the map. You must end your ride and restart the ride and route. I reached out to Wahoo and they said it's a known sporadic issue on rides post 13 hours and they recommend breaking the rides into segmented lengths that would be consistent with a normal charging time. Basically the map will freeze at the units standard battery cycle (for me it's about 14hrs with my settings). I keep my Roam plugged into an external battery for 15hr+ rides/races. I wouldn't recommend this unit for anyone interested in ultra endurance events. Somewhere in the Wahoo tech description it should say only good for 1 charge cycle at a time. Wahoo knows about the issue.

4th Wahoo ELEMNT! Never going elsewhere

This is the 4th Bolt I’ve purchased! One of those was a gift! I love the ease of the app and device integration. Custom pages are the best, and the data is perfect. The design is easy to work with while riding. It is a necessary tool for a cyclist.

Probably my only disappointment so

Probably my only disappointment so far is that the bracket is way too big for my handlebars and that there were no shims provided to wrap around the handlebar to take up the space. I had to improvise with a garden hose. I understand that there is probably a need for such a large diameter bracket for other bikes, but at least please provide shims to fill the space for smaller handlebarred bikes.
