When it comes to efficiency-focused touring skis, it's important to consider factors other than weight — eventually what goes up will need to come down after all. Chances are that you’ll be using the ski to travel to high-consequence alpine terrain at least some of the time, so considerations involving downhill performance and durability should probably be part of the conversation. Volkl has been in this category that lies between ski touring and ski mountaineering for some time, and their latest offering — the Rise High 88 — is eager to impress. The ski implements a wood core consisting of beech, poplar, and paulownia layers for dampness, encased in a carbon jacket which provides lots of stiffness at a minimal weight penalty. The carbon jacket also improves durability, while the 3D RIDGE topsheet prevents ice build up, making the ski extremely usable and reliable in rugged high-alpine terrain.
