Skin it all. Ski it all.

You got the BMT 90 Ski because Volkl claims it's the most versatile option out of their entire backcountry collection, but you aren't going to ski powdery peaks or tight couloirs if you can't climb to the top. Volkl cut the BMT 90 Tapered Glue Skins to fit your versatile sticks so you can reach all the beautiful backcountry destinations. Volkl made this pair mostly out of mohair for more glide than grip, but there's a touch of nylon to add grip and durability. Volkl's SkinPin tip attachment leaves the competition envious over its simple, secure, and original design.

    • Climbing skins cut to fit Volkl's BMT 90 Backcountry Ski
    • Mohair mix balances between grip and glide
    • SkinPin tip attachment designed specifically for Volkl skis
    • Standard tail attachment maintains security from first switchback to last

    Volkl BMT 90 Skins

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I purchased these skins with the belief that Volkl Skis are super, the skins must be equal or over the top and the pin system would be a snap. I have spent hundreds of days over the last 22 years exploring Colorado, Utah and British Columbia, Canada on Backcountry equipment. The Volkl BMT 90 skis are fantastic, but the precut Volkl BMT 90 skins made by Colltex are less than par for what is out there in the market. I am used to Ascension then Black Diamond skins which are quite sticky, these Colltex skins are not sticky and you must take extra care with them to keep even a reasonable adherence. This I would like to outline. The precut shape was odd at first for you must fold them exactly in half, so for those who like to pull from the tail and make a fold then pull more and make a fold, you cannot do this for there will be glue showing. The instructions say you must use the cheat sheets in the field, the cheat sheets are about 4 inches longer than center point and you can get good at folding them in, but it is one more step and in bad windy weather it is a bummer. But believe me you should use the sheets for it is saving the poor adherence. The precut shape is very pointed on the shovel, this is sorta stupid for when the snow is crusty or strugi and you did not get excellent adherence the snow will push under the skin. On the way down, you really must keep these skins warm or again they will not adhere. So with skins in your jacket you must enjoy a wet belly and pictures that make you look pregnant. Short shots in your pack are ok, but it doesn’t take much cold to make them not stick. Finally it is best to carry a small plastic scraper and make sure the ptex is clear of any icing and best to dry the base with your jacket arm. If the day is nice and you take all steps these have excellent glide up hill and standard grip, if the weather is poor and you skip any step you will have a skin hanging and then you will have to clear that snow by pulling them across on your ski edge and they are scary thin, so cutting them appears possible. All the best, be safe out there.
