TriMax 30 Disc Wheelset

Race day is a few months out, and you can't justify hammering out training laps and putting the hurt on your carbon hoops this early on, so toss on a workhorse of a wheelset, like the Vision TriMax 30 Disc Wheelset for a balanced, in-between wheel that keeps you rolling without the carbon price tag. Vision builds the TriMax 30 for soaring down the tarmac, and taking things beyond the beaten path onto old gravel country roads, and CX courses alike. It features a CNC machined rim with a wide profile for tubeless setup, laced up neatly by hand to quick-rolling hubs with six sealed-cartridge bearings (two in the front, four in the rear). Aero-bladed spokes aim to reduce drag when you're soaring down steep canyons, and lace into self-locking nipples to reduce fuss when you're riding. The wheels come ready to roll with 10-11-speed compatible HG freehubs, so all you have to do is toss on your cassette and hit the long and dusty road.

Super light for the price and extras

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This wheel is a great bargain for a light, strong wheel suitable for road or gravel. The weight is on the light side for gravel and if you can find it for $400 you can't really beat this for the price. It comes with skewers and axle adapters for various configurations but it is setup stock for a 12 mm thru axle. The tubeless works fine, but there are very minimal instructions with this wheelset both in the box and online. At times it seems to rely on graphical images instead of words which can be confusing. For example, to replace the thru axle with the QR pieces I'm pretty sure you need 2 12 mm hex wrenches which aren't a commonly used tool so I have that on order. The other pieces just press on but it definitely seems like the default axle pieces are threaded on. There is no documentation of this process anywhere. And if you try to pull them off with pliers you'll likely scratch up the soft aluminum. So don't do that, even with a cloth. The freehub shows a warning image indicating that the largest cogs must be attached to a carrier since the aluminum is soft and will deform if you use loose cogs. Again, this would be more clearly communicated with words. These types of things are probably obvious to shop techs but for those with below average knowledge of bikes will find this a bit annoying when you consider the average Shimano part historically comes with multiple useless pamphlets with about 100 translations of instructions. Setting up tubeless was pretty straightforward but again, nobody seems to offer basic documentation and it's been a few years since my last tubeless install so the first wheel was a mess because I didn't seat the tire before injecting the sealant. Also, the rim tape is not sticky so you'll want to make sure the hole is lined up perfectly or the sealant will escape underneath the tape and out the spoke holes. Due to the low spoke count, beefy rim, and asymmetric lacing I found this wheel difficult to true as it had a slight hop in the front out of the box and I was concerned about messing with the spoke tension of a front wheel. The other set that came with my bike were a bit more true so it's probably just a QC issue. All in all, a solid, light wheel at a bargain price and very versatile and adaptable for 10-11 speed, disc, thru-axle, QR, etc. with all of the pieces (but not the tool) you need. If you get the Centerlock version it also comes with lockrings.
