Why We Like The Metron 40 Disc Wheelset

Get a little more speed for your watts with the Metron 40 Disc Wheelset from Vision. It's fairly common knowledge that deep section wheels slice through the air easier, however, deeper wheels generally come with a weight penalty, while carbon fiber mitigates this significantly and also boosting stiffness. Using a refined airfoil shape, the wind stays better attached to the rim which creates less turbulence and drag in its wake. But, then there's the cost. Perhaps what impresses us the most with this wheelset is its World Tour-proven pedigree at a price that's around half of that from other brands.

These particular Metrons have a 40mm deep and 24.5mm width profile, honed from Vision's CFD and wind tunnel testing and are designed to reduce drag and hold speed while pairing better with the increasingly wider road rubber between 25 to 30mm wide. Further aerodynamic touches come from the reduced distance between the hub flanges, and the straight pull bladed spokes threading into its durable ABS nipples. The ABS nipples use a special self-locking design to keep spokes from loosening and thus, coming out of true. This results in a wheelset that's durable and will remain true for many seasons. We also like the 40's as its depth puts it in a sweet spot of aerodynamics without being a handful in blustery, crosswind days and keeps its fighting weight low enough for lumpy rides and even some serious climbing. Of course, they're plenty durable enough for everyday use as well.

Vision builds these wheels by hand and laces it an asymmetric 2:1 pattern front and rear with 21 spokes up front and 24 in the rear. By doubling up the spokes on the drive side rear and disc side front, it helps improve the power transfer and braking torque and allows the spoke tension to be higher on the reduced spoke side for better balancing of tension that’s inherent in dishing the wheels for a rotor or cassette. Speaking of cassettes, this version comes with an alloy Shimano/SRAM 11-speed road freehub body. To ensure smooth spinning for several seasons, the hubs are fitted with 6 sealed cartridge bearings total, with the rear receiving the angular contact variety providing proper bearing preload for smooth spinning and long life. The wheels include QR, 12, and 15mm Thru-Axle adapters for the front and QR and 12mm Thru-Axle ones for the rear.

Rear Hub Trashed

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Height
5` 9"
Weight
165 lbs

Bought these in October 2020 and the rear hub is already trashed. LBS (Okinawa, Japan) tells me I need a new freehub and bearings. WTF? After just 10 months. BTW: Good luck finding one online. Can’t even find it here on CC.com. Google search seems to validate this (grinding noise from the rear hub) is a known issue. No one seems to know how to fix it. Love the wheels otherwise. Searching for parts. Any suggestions?

What's in the box!!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I've had about every wheelset out there, nice carbon road wheels, and one thing I've found is that along with the wheels you have to buy a bunch of other stuff. I could not have been happier when I opened my Vision wheels and it included - wheels bags, wheels taped and extra roll of tape, lock rings, qr's and end caps to fit about any thru axle, cassette spacer, valve stems, yea EVERYTHING you want and need. total pleasant surprise. also packaged extremely well and protected well, better than any wheel I've ever bought. Wheels are light and mount up great. Still breaking them in but so far love everything about them.
