Why We Like The Union Expedition Splitboard Binding

Many split-specific bindings are focused on making it easier to get to the top, but at the cost of downhill performance. Considering that our ultimate goal is to score fresh powder on the way down, Union designed the Expedition Splitboard Binding to deliver the closest feeling possible to shredding on a solid board with standard bindings. It also has a simple design that minimizes moving parts, not only lending a solid feel but also making it quick and easy to switch over at the top.

Best Value Splitboard Binding

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

My wife and I both bought a pair. We're lifetime Union riders, I've toured a few times before and she's just getting into touring. First, for the price these bindings are a great value, they come with the parts to setup pucks on a splitboard and a normal board, and some extra parts; unlike other touring bindings where you have to buy all that separate. Second, setup is so refreshingly simple and intuitive compared to normal splitboard pucks and bindings. They are built just like normal Unions so adjustment to your boot is normal and easy, and you know they will be bombproof like Unions always are. The heel riser seems easy to engage and disengage, and the height is in between systems with dual height risers, which I think is perfect. Transitions are very quick and easy, honestly this rotating motion seems way easier than sliding onto the pucks. Lastly, I was skeptical of the Union pin system, but after setting them up I have full confidence in it. In touring mode the pin locks into place and would be pretty hard to disengage with your boot in the binding. In skiing mode the pin also has a locking position that is so tight my only concern is being able to unlock the pin with cold fingers! (Pulling on the string seems to make it easier). I will update this review after we use them a few times next season, but my first impression is to buy a pair, especially if they're on sale.

I hopped on the Explorers for the first time this season. After putting them to good use all Winter up here in the PNW, I am STOKED on these Bad Larry's! *Fast transitions: The approachable and easily-understandable function/design of these bindings makes it easy to get from climbing to riding.. FAST. *Familiarity: After 15 of snowboarding, I finally started splitboarding. These feel almost identical to my regular bindings when I'm strapped in! One morning, the plan was to ride park. When I got to the mountain, I realized that I accidentally left the Explorers attached to my park board. Luckily, it made almost no difference! Wedges, rails, boxes... they held up to the beating! *They didn't hurt my wallet: Much more affordable than other options out there. I'm riding these things because of expensive lift ticket prices after all... Union rules!

I can't say enough about how happy I have been with my Union Split Bindings. I tried them out in the beginning because they were the best option that fit into my budget at the time, I realize never a great choice with backcountry gear but I needed new Bindings Quick and had a budget.... but now I'm stoked because of how they work vs the Alternative brands out there. They are quick to change over between both ride & tour options which I love and prioritize. Being that I live in the PNW, lots of snow accumulation and varying temps can sometimes be a pain with Split bindings but not the Unions, they work flawlessly on changeover everytime and snow build up is never a problem to clear quickly. Honestly though, the best part about these bindings is they Feel and Ride just like my Forces... so comfy and stable but also, so warm... I have always found bindings that are predominantly plastic rather than metal are just warmer and a more pleasant experience for both regular snowboard and Split gear... Thanks again Union... Your split gear is perfect.....

They do exactly what you need them to do. They take you from point A to Point B and give you the comfort of a Union Binding on the way up and on the way down. They feel and look like a snowboard binding, which was the selling point for me.

I'm a fan of chairlifts. I love snowboarding downhill, not skiing uphill. I only split so I can get to the fresh snow and access better lines down. These bindings are for snowboarders not extreme mountain walkers. For me they are the best because the bindings look and ride like real Union snowboard bindings, not some goofy metal contraption made out of your brothers old erector set parts. Set up is super easy, not a pain in the ass like most split gear. The price is also pretty nice in comparison to the other stuff out there. These things make any board ride better than most split bindings I have tried. When you put your board together they tighten up and make the board more solid with less rattle and more torsional stability. Easy set up, comfortable as hell, ride great, not lame looking. I would definitely recommend these bindings.

I bought these things a few months ago, and man... So easy to set up, get out there and ride the white wave. I've had some other aluminum contraptions, and it took another month to get pucks and all the BS I needed, just to go shred! The thing I didn't realize about my past bindings, is they were horrible riding on the downhill. These Union Explorers ride so good, I feel like I could use them on my park board. Highly recommended!!!!!

Now that it?s split season here in The Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains, I?ve finally had the chance to get these things dialed. I am not a big fan of messing with split boards and skins and all that comes with it, so I?ve just been using the Rover system that is also made by Union. This way my family and I can just use our regular boards on the way down. So far these have been pretty straight forward and easy to use. Everything you need comes in the box so there was no driving all over town trying to piece things together. Setting them up with the "quiver" disk is quite simple, however I do recommend taking your time setting them up on your split board to get used to the split disk and pin system before going out. But other than that, it truly is a simple system. We?re already carving out more time over the next couple weeks to use them again before the snow melts. Simple. Affordable. Light weight. I do gotta say that the highbacks could be a bit stiffer though.

These Bindings have been a solid addition to my quiver, and are almost perfect for someone like myself that likes to access the side country off the top of the resort and go on a few larger trips every year. I have have also made use of the Quiver disc that comes in the box for travelling as It allows me to just bring the Explorer as my only set of bindings. I gotta say the performance on my regular board is amazing, feels just like my normal bindings. 1 pro tip I have discovered is to leave a tiny gap on the metal plates that the split discs attach to for your back foot as opposed to pushing them too firmly together when mounting the metal plate. It helps to further increase the tightening effect the Explorer has on reducing any gap between the 2 sides of the split board.

Finally a split binding that actually rides like a snowboard binding! I'm not an alpinist, I spend all of my time touring in side country while prioritizing dropping cliffs and having a more freestyle mindset. This binding gets me out and up easily and the ride down is incredible, highly recommend. I pair these with the Rovers from Union and the combo is pretty next level... I would give 5 stars if they were pinless!!
