Deploy Convertible Backpack
Based out of San Francisco, the bike-savvy folks at Timbuk2 are no stranger to designing functional packs that live up to the Bay Area's iconic commuter culture and the Deploy Convertible Pack is no different with its pannier-to-backpack functionality. This hybrid pack effortlessly transitions from functional pannier to backpack with hook-and-loop straps that conveniently fasten to virtually any bike rack, plus air mesh straps and raised back pods that keep pannier hardware from needlessly scratching your back.
The Deploy is designed from rugged, water-resistant materials that fend off passing showers and road spray with ease and the bottom is reinforced to withstand setting it down on abrasive surfaces. It enjoys a roll-top closure with adjustable fasteners to keep your gear cinched down tightly inside, plus a magnetically bound front lid pocket for quickly accessing the everyday essentials, you know—wallet, keys, and phone. There's a handy side-access zipper to the laptop compartment, so you can grab and stash your computer in mere seconds. Additionally, it's decked out with reflective details along the sides, so you can easily be seen while zipping through traffic and coasting down hills en route to work.

Fell apart in less than a week
- I've used it several times
Don't get me wrong, I love Timbuk2, but this bag doesn't meet the quality of their other products. It lasted just under a week before the pannier hook ripped off mid commute, narrowly avoiding getting run over by a car. I was disappointed but wanted to give Timbuk2 a chance to either fix or replace the bag so brought it to their Shotwell factory store. One week later I tried the repaired bag, only to have the same experience less than 10 minutes into my commute the next day. The problem is that the pannier hooks (found on the web for $8.99) are only being held on by a thin piece of cardboard and a small screw(no washer) which can easily get pulled through the cardboard backing. I was really sad to have invested almost $200 on this thing that lasted ~9 rides. If I was to do it again, I'd buy the hooks for $10 and attach them to one of my old bags. Use the $190 that you saved by not buying this bag for an actual pannier bag, this thing is the worst.

Overall a really great bag!
- I've used it several times
I really like the look of the bag and it has a lot of space. The bag was a little uncomfortable to wear on my back at first but once you get used to it, it’s not that bad. This is my second Timbuk2 pannier/bag and I think my other pannier/bag was easier to switch between the two options. Instead of stuffing the straps into their slots I will use the chest strap to clip the straps to the front of the bag. I do wish the main pocket had some more organizational pockets. I also don’t like the way you close the roll up. I wish there were clips instead of the hooks. But overall I think it’s a really great bag!
