- Q & A
Very good looking and easy to set up. I have it on my jeep and it doesn't look like a goofy ufo on top. It is pretty small and mainly intended for skis or snowboards and a few smaller items. It can be hard to close if you stuff it with lots of bags and other camping gear but it works. I really like this box
For size reference
Here are a couple of packs in the box for size reference.
Daanng, this looks good.
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
So, cargo boxes have a tendency to look, well, like a box. They tend to be a blocky mess that makes cars look silly, like they are transporting a plastic sofa. This Pulse Alpine, however, if different. Its thinner, and very streamlined, which ends makes it end up looking reaaaally good. On top of my Subaru, it actually looks nice, instead of like I'm transporting granite.
Whats more the box is pretty awesome so what it's meant for. It is made to carry skis and snowboards, and the thin profile really proves that. You can fit about 4-5 skis, and maybe 2-3 snowboards in it, which is just enough for me (I am skier though, so I don't know if that means anything).
The length. FINALLY A BOX THAT CAN CARRY LONG SKIS! For the longest time, I was having trouble finding a box that can carry skis about 190cm, but this box has solved all my problems. At 225cm, this box can carry any ski you can think of, even the long-bangers your great-grandfather used to ski on.
On another positive note, the clamps feel super solid. Why the box itself is hard plastic,t the clamps that hold the box onto the rack are mostly metal, and super solid.
Now, there are some negatives. First of all, that box only opens on the passenger side. While this is a only a little problem, it can be annoying to have to walk all the way around the car to open the box (walking is dumb).
Second, I don't know if this is a design choice, but the plastic seems pretty flimsy. Like, I am sure Thule has tested it, and its okay, but I feel like I could probably stab through the plastic with screwdriver. Its quite flexible, which I could see being a design choice to combat the wind, but it just feel super weak.
In conclusion, I do dig this box a lot. If you are looking for a box to carry just skis and snowboards (or just small loads) and want it to look good too, this may be the one for you!
Great size for daily use
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
This fits 3 to 4 skis very well and is not huge and bulky on the roof like the bigger boxes. For carrying a few skis or boards to and from the the mountain.
Searched several sites and local retailers for best cargo box and found Backcountry.com to be the most helpful. I have a 2007 FJ Cruiser with factory Roof Rack that other retailers seemed confused about proper fit. Backcountry gave me the proper fit requirements for my FJ and the Thule 613 fit perfectly both on my FJ and in the garage. Price and shipping were also the best i could find. ( Better price in Utah than where i live in Oregon )
Do this box, and most cargo boxes generally, have a drain? I'm thinking of what happens when you throw snow caked skis in the box, then the snow melts. Thx
Erik, no drain but, I havent ever had an issue with mine and water build up. Ive put snow caked skis in them lots of times and sometimes there is water a day or two afterwards but, nothing crazy or enough to make me try and dry it out.
What are the interior dimensions of this box? Looking to fit 3-4 pairs of skis (max length 180cm) and a couple snowboards.
This box will hold anything under 210cm just fine. The box is made to hold :
Ski/Snowboard capacity 4-6 pair skis, 2-3 boards (under 210cm) .So 4 skis and 2 boards might be pushing it, but you can always try.
If you needed something even bigger than this check out :
Force XXL: 92.5 x 36 x 18 in
Pulse Alpine : 88.5 x 25.5 x 12.5 in
Can this box fit on a Subaru WRX 5 Door without limiting your ability to open the back hatch? Anyone? Bueller?
what else do I need to attach this box...
what else do I need to attach this box (613) to a 2013 ford exploier with a factory roof rack?
My experience with Thules is First you can move your factory bars up and down the rails. Second the Thules attachment system typically has a water resistant groove where the clamps go through that is about 8 " long so that gives you more play.
