- Q & A
I tried not to need it...
I tried to use other people's help to load my boats. I also tried to load them myself at times, while trying not to tear off my side mirror if it slipped, or scratch the mess out of my paint job while manuevering it into place. The bottom line is...why? I was having trouble justifying a purchase for a piece of BAR to load my boards, but the in end, it was stubborn behavior that should not go unpunished. It's just a BAR, right? Welp folks, this bar is worth the money to avoid scratches and dents down your car by "loadings gone wrong", and you can do it ALONE! The fact that I don't have to scope out my surroundings for a stranger who's willing to help me load my boat is so...relaxing. My Spitfire (orange) is around 43lbs, 9' long, and is quite light when you're just toting it around. But when trying to balance it, put it over your head, and throw it up into a Thule J Craddle (love that thing) when you're only 5'5" and your SUV is taller than you, it is just ridiculous (and I'm sure I looked quite foolish doing it). It makes for a pleasurable day when the Outrigger is part of the family. I absolutely cannot lift my Versa board (blue) onto my car alone (before now). It is 53lbs, and 12' long, so it's hard to balance mid air. Again, the Outrigger has made my previously dreaded loading/unloading a mere pleasure now. Thank you, Thule, for another rockin product.
Just the help I need!
I recently took a one-week trip kayaking and fishing. I am a 5'2" female and loading the kayak onto the roof of my car was much easier with the Outrigger II! It is worth every cent I spent on it!
Thule Outrigger II
I like the Outrigger II, but if you don't want a nice scratch on your vehicle. Put a cloth or towel on the paint work. It does make loading the yak a lot easier. I would buy this again and recommend it.
I just bought a new Escape and I'm a 5'4" independent woman. The Outrigger allows me to go kayaking whenever I want. It makes loading my kayak a breeze! I love it and have recommended it to my friends.
Thule Outrigger II
I'm a 60-year-old Backpacker/Fisherman/Canoeist, who is too independent for his age. But loading my canoe by myself onto my truck was becoming just too much. The Thule Outrigger was very easy to mount and it makes loading my canoe so much easier and safer!

Is there another piece to purchase to make this work? I have a Tahoe, and need the cross rails (side to side) to attach to the factory roof bars (front to back). Is this a cross rail, or just something that goes into an already assembled cross rail?
These are only an add-on attachment for the Thule standard load bars (THU0054). Beyond the load bars you will still need the get the appropriate towers and fit kit for your car. If you go up and to the left there is a banner for the Thule Fit Guide which will help you find everything you need, otherwise you can always give us a call and one of our Gearheads can talk you through it.

i have a 2009 rav 4. I want the safest and easiest kayak carrier for two kayaks. What do you recommend?
Thule Hullavator is by far the easiest. Its also muy expensivo. A cheaper option would be to get the outrigger to help hoist up the boat, then get 2 Thule hull-a-ports, or Yakima HullRaisers, which provide 4 contact points (each) for extra boat security. Check out http://yakima.com/Consumer/Step1.aspx and http://www.thuleracks.com/carrier_water1.asp to custom outfit your vehicle.

Is this hard to install? I have factory (Subaru Forester) racks. I have the Thule glide system which are great (except one of the pads came off after two years) and my Subaru racks have worked just fine. I don't want to make rack changes if I don't have to. Thanks for your help with this!
Simple to install. Might take two people to line up but I did it myself
