Why We Like The Helium Platform 2 Bike Hitch Rack

As paint jobs on bikes continue to break barriers in appeal and individual customization, protecting your bike's image — as well as its carbon — is understandably a top priority. Thule charges into the frameless contact market with their Helium Platform 2, which clamps directly at the tires, thus avoiding any contact with your frame — or friend's frame in this two-bike edition. Loading the bikes is a time-saving wonder as you'll unfold the wheel loops, set the bikes in the trays, and ratchet down the loops to secure the wheels in place. Stashing last-minute cargo in the hatch is now less complicated, as the Helium tilts via the HitchSwitch to clear the vehicle's hatch even when the bikes are loaded. And finally, lock the bikes for added security during transport en route to the trailhead with the integrated cable lock (included).

Thule's Helium line strives to reduce weight and maintain strength, and the Helium Platform 2's 43.2lbs saves nearly nine pounds compared to the popular T2 Pro XT 2 bike rack. Still, the Helium Platform 2 holds a total of 75lb (37.5lb per tray) to accommodate a healthy range of bicycle types. And fitting wheel sizes from 26-29in and tires up to three inches wide, you're ready to roll on and off the trails.

Best hitch rack design ever!

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I just had to chime in here. We could not be more pleased with this rack. We have had it for about 2 years and the functionality is amazing. It simply could not be any faster and easier to load/unload bikes. The cable lock thing is a little awkward, but we figure we just need to use it more (we have only used it a couple of times). Luckily (knock on wood), we have not had anything break on it. I empathize with the poor guy experiencing the horrible customer service, but we have not had to engage with Thule. So no feedback either way on that. We love this rack so much that even if it breaks and there is no customer service, we will probably just buy another one.

Should Have Listened to the Engineer

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

When I bought this rack a April 2021 the average rating was 4-stars with a single one-star rating from an engineer. The engineer claimed that the build quality was poor and that the Thule brand was not what it use to be. I considered the engineer's opinion to be a one-off, disgruntled customer. I wish I had listened. My logic was that with a lifetime warranty, and lots of on-line replacement parts, why should I worry. Well, guess what ... the "Wedge Nut" that holds the rack into the receiver fell off after ONE USE! Customer Service told me that it is not a replaceable part .... It's a Warranty Part! So, what that means is that I need to complete tons of paper work and miss out on a month of biking because "that wedge nut isn't supposed to do that." Lesson Learned ... when an engineer says the quality is bad .... trust the engineer.

Substandard engineering

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I am not sure what is going on with Thule, as they used to be THE standard for bicycle racks. The plastic bits on the Helium platform are the Achilles heal of this rack. They make up the critical connections with the aluminum trays and they fail over time due to the required force (which is not much) at the ratchet straps to tighten the bike to the rack. I have purchased Thule products since 1988, sad to see that the engineering and quality are not what they used to be.
