The Ultimate Pack
I've been using the AllTrail 45 for a little over 2 years now and I'm super happy with it, aside from one little downside: The outer compartment on the back side, when fully packed, sticks out and the top lid is unable to cover it, leaving the compartment and contents exposed at the top. The compartment needs an additional 3 or 4 inches of material added to the top, I'd say. I've managed to live with it and it hasn't detracted from the rest of the pack being pretty stellar. Very robust, but not overly heavy. Shoulder straps are by far the best I've had on any pack. Adjustable back panel is pretty slick. Side mesh pockets are actually usable, unlike many I've had on other packs, and are holding up well after a lot of abuse. A feature I really appreciate is the side zip. I generally don't use it for it's intended use of taking gear in and out of the main compartment, instead I have the zippers positioned at the bottom and use them to crack open enough to slide in a nalgene water bottle to the very bottom of the pack. Thule have thoughtfully designed a sort of "stopper platform" about 5 inches above the bottom, leaving an empty cavity that has been working well for a water bottle. It can be easily accessed without taking the pack off and centers the heavier weight of the bottle at the bottom, as apposed to the side mesh pockets, which I've never been a fan of. I use this pack for ski tour paragliding and summer hike and flies in the mountains of British Columbia. It's got enough room for a wing, harness, all my avy safety gear, food and clothing. Having a pack that works nearly flawlessly has been a very important aspect for the things I do. After 2 years of wild mountain experiences I've grown pretty attached to this piece of equipment. Aside from the rear compartment nitpick it hasn't let me down. I would like to see a larger version of this pack, however. A 55L or 60L would enable me to pack a sleeping bag and bivy sack for over night trips. I know Thule offers the 60L Versant, which I own, but I don't like it nearly as much as the AllTrail. And another note: The AllTrail 35 has the clam shell top design. I'd like to see that pack in and 45L and 50L.
