Carbon Road Handlebar

As one of the first Thomson products to diverge from their aerospace-grade aluminum mainstay, the Thomson Carbon Road Handlebar represents the company's foray into masterful carbon road bars. Retaining the renowned quality that makes Thomson famous, these carbon bars are manufactured by Toray, which is the same company that produces carbon fiber for aerospace giants such as Boeing and Airbus. To be sure these bars stand up to Thomson's stringent quality-control standards, they're certified to rigorous EN and tested to DIN+ standards.

Created from a Nano Epoxy Resin for the utmost in impact-resistance, these bars feature a one piece lay-up. In comparison, the competition often uses three pieces co-molded and glued together to cut costs. Adding extra strength, 1.5K woven impact ends prevent structural damage to the uni-directional carbon fibers in the event of a heavy impact.

The bars themselves feature a mild wing shape along the topside, with a clamping area that's suitable for aero bars, yet small enough as to not restrict hand movement when you're riding along the bar's topside. Furthermore, this subtle wing shape allows for bar angle adjustment without "locking out" your wrists. Additionally, the shaping along the bottom side of the wing facilitates the housing to be taped out of the way, without resorting to the use of narrow housing channels or internal routing, both of which shorten bar life over time.

The drop is proportional to the widths, being 137-millimeters for the 40-centimeter width, 140-millimeters for the 42 and 44-centimeter widths, and 143-millimeters for the 46-centimeter width bar. Reach is 78.5-millimeters. Thomson recommends a torque of 5nm, and they come with friction paste for installation.

Works for me

I've put it through the wringer

Got this to replace my stock bars on a CAAD12 and they made a huge difference. The carbon dampens the road vibration more than the old bars, but still communicates road feel really well. Bar diameter, shape, weight...they got all those details right. It fits my hands and posture just right. Love it.

Big Fan

Thomson makes some amazing gear and they never cut corners. I have run these bars on three different bikes now and love them. They have a great overall shape, with a slightly flattened / egg shaped top section which helps disperse hand pressure when riding on the tops. Also, their construction method is pretty neat. "The layup uses 3 different fiber types with different tensile strengths and tensile modulus, including High Strength carbon fiber. This helps allocate stiffness and flex where needed." "All carbon fiber is produced by Toray and uses tailor-made Nano Epoxy Resin for very high impact resistance. Toray is the main supplier of carbon fiber for Boeing and Airbus." Toray is used by a number of higher end bike manufacturers, including Pinarello, which uses a very similar construction process as well. "Both the Road and ‘Cross bar are made in one piece, not three pieces co-molded and glued together. The bars are molded over an EPS mandrel to avoid wrinkles inside the layup during molding. Most other bars are molded over inflatable nylon bladders."

Love them!

I've put it through the wringer

I've got the 46's and love the shape and feel of these bars. The top portion is flat enough to give your hands a nice rest but not too wide that the tops don't fit nicely in the hand while gripped. The drops are at a very comfortable level and comfortable on the hands in extended use. The porting for the wiring of the brakes and shifters is excellent, as they dive out of the way of your grip. For the price, they are an excellent value.

Do these have stealth ports or all external?

All cable routing is external; there are grooves for the cables on the underside of the bar.

deep drops, light weight

I've put it through the wringer

Great handlebars, they've got a fairly deep drop which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just gets you lower. The tops are mildly flattened with a recessed bottom area for external cable routing. Haven't crashed with them yet so I can't attest to durability but they look great on my 2013 Scott CR1.

How do these bars work with Campagnolo 11 speed shifters?

These handlebars will work perfectly with Campy 11 speed shifters. If there is anything else I can do for you, please feel free to contact me directly at or at 801-736-6396 ext 4823.

Where is the width measured?

Where is the width measured?

According to the blueprints shown on the Thomson website, all measurements are center to center.
